A fundraiser is due to be held for Palestine in an evening of food, art and music and the Silk Mill on Friday 14th November at 6pm.
The event titled Razaqa: Sustain Palestine will see Frome’s top chefs, artists, musicians and community organisers produce an evening of communal eating, music, art and contemplation in support of and solidarity with the people of Palestine.
Funds raised from the event will be distributed to Gaza Soup Kitchen, a charity providing vital food supplies to Gaza, and Hebron International Resource Network, which gives support to farmers, schools and families subjected to settler violence.
One of the organisers, Lyndsey Mayhew, said, “Razaqa, which means ‘to sustain’ or ‘to provide for’ and aims to shed light on and support Palestinian culture, land and food heritage at urgent risk of erasure by Israel, assisted by Western administrations.
“The event will include a family-style meal showcasing Palestinian culture, ingredients and dishes curated by Frome’s top chefs, including Georgie Everett (Babington House/The Wild Pear), Juli Perella (Hoolee’s Goodies), Tom Wilford (42 Acres/The Culture Collective), and international food artist Cherry Truluck. The bar will feature Palestinian wine, ‘Gaza Cola’ and bespoke cocktails from Annalee Levin, the artist behind ‘Climate Conscious Cocktails’ and landlady of ‘Eli’s’ Rose & Crown in Huish Episcopi, while live music will be courtesy of local musicians led by Natalie Brice (Sinnober).
“Guests can also participate in an art auction of postcard-sized works by Frome-based artists; a solidarity supermarket with Frome Friends of Palestine and ethical wholesaler Zaytoun; and a moment for ritual and contemplation with Palestinian olive oil, herbs, bread, and pickles.”
Food artist and co-curator of the event Cherry Truluck said, “There is no doubt that we are witnessing the attempted erasure of both the Palestinian people and their extraordinary and ancient culture. This is a tragedy that cannot be borne. We are compelled to raise as much money as we can to support the people of Gaza and the wider Palestinian communities and also to platform that rich culture, in which food and communality plays such a central role.”
