Broadway Community Gardens, a cherished green space in the heart of Frome, is appealing for support from local building companies to bring two projects to life.
With funding recently secured from the Rural Prosperity Fund and the CLA Charitable Trust, the garden’s volunteers are eager to create an accessible composting toilet and a new shelter to make the space more inclusive and welcoming. However, they are now looking to the community to help clear and prepare the grounds to begin construction.
“The toilet is planned for the spring however, before we can install it, we need help clearing and levelling a large section of the garden, currently overgrown with blackberries and stinging nettles,” explained executive director of Cultivating Community which works in partnership with Broadway Community Gardens to help raise funds and develop the site.
“We are asking if any building companies can donate a digger for land clearance or any of the materials needed for levelling the base of the toilet and a new shelter we hope to get funding for next year. Any help to get some of this prep work done would really get these essential projects underway.”
The team also says that the Frome Town rangers have done a lot of work to install compacted disabled accessible pathways through some of the site and put in a new gate.
“Special thanks to Polly Coupland Garden Design and Elements Build, who generously donated their time and expertise with volunteers this month to lay a beautiful lawn in one of our recently cleared areas,” says Sam. “This lawn is just the first step that will enable us to install raised, accessible growing beds for disabled users.
“Another exciting project this October, is the creation of a wildlife pond, coordinated by Zak from Froglife with funding from the Rotary Club. The pond will help support local biodiversity.
“We have regular volunteer sessions on Wednesdays and Sunday mornings and have a number of community days planned to get the site ready for the 2025 growing season. Whether you are a seasoned gardener or just eager to get involved, your time and support will make a huge difference.”
