Frome & District Probus Club recently ventured into the game of croquet.
John Hedges reports, “This July, many of the club members and their wives met at the Corsley Memorial Playing Field to try their hands at the ancient game.
“Three courts were laid out, the members split into a dozen and a half teams and off they bravely went into the sometimes mysterious game, playing three rounds in all.
“Many of us had never played before and we can’t be sure we exactly followed the rules, but great fun was had and even an occasional flair of skill.
“The winner was our current President Patrick Naughton (we promise it wasn’t a fix!) and his partner Mary Purchase.
“We are grateful to our Social Secretary John Hillier for organising the event and to Bill Vallis who provided mallets, balls and hoops, and acted as referee. The weather was kind and we finished with a celebratory glass of Pimm’s followed by a cream tea.”
Frome Probus is a local social group for retired professional and business men that was founded in 1984. It meets on the 3rd Tuesday of each month at The Standerwick Centre in Frome Market.
