Crowdfunder aims to raise £4,500 to provide 300 plastic-free period packs for Frome students

Crowdfunder aims to raise £4,500 to provide 300 plastic-free period packs for Frome students

GREEN and Healthy Frome’s Plastic Free Period crowdfunding campaign launched on International Women’s Day earlier this month, and is hoping to raise £4,500 to buy a ‘period pack’ for all young people in Year 8 and Year 9 who need one.

The Plastic Free Period project focuses on the potential carbon saving, cost savings and health impacts for women, girls and all people who menstruate, as well as people experiencing incontinence, through switching to plastic-free products.

The packs that the project hopes to buy contain three pairs of period pants, a reusable pad, a waterproof bag and an information booklet. Period pants offer greater comfort, can be worn for longer without changing, and are washable and reusable.

Project champion Fiona Barrows said, “There are so many reasons to switch to plastic-free period products, but the stigma around periods is still a big barrier, as is the upfront cost of products. The more we can normalise and engage with our body and its needs, whilst thinking about the impact our choices have on our planet, the more we can break down these barriers.

“We know that caring for the planet is a priority for many young people, but they don’t always have the buying power to go plastic-free. If we can raise the money to give every Year 8 and 9 students that need one a celebration pack, that will go a long way to support those choices. This is an opportunity for you to support a young person in Frome to make the switch.”

The period packs cost £15, less than half the usual retail price, and the crowdfunder aims to raise £4,500, enough to buy 300 packs. A single user of plastic period products throws away up to 200kg of period waste in their lifetime, which goes into landfill or can end up in UK waterways.

Although plastic-free period products cost more at the outset, the cost of plastic period products is estimated to be around £10 a month, or £5,000 in a lifetime. The packs therefore help create a habit which is not only greener but ultimately cheaper. The carbon footprint of a single year’s worth of plastic period products is 5.3kg CO2 equivalent, or for the population of Frome, 72,000kg of carbon each year.

Vic Yerbury, practice nurse at Frome Medical Practice said, “It’s a win/win/win – if we can successfully raise our target, we can really make a difference to the conversation around periods for over 300 students. We will be able to encourage well-being – by helping students address period poverty, supporting them through period anxiety and also doing our bit to help students make sustainable choices – saving potentially thousands of sanitary products from landfill. With your help, we can get the celebration packs into schools and make a real difference to our young people.”

Plastic Free Period is part of Green and Healthy Frome, a partnership between Frome Medical Practice, Edventure and Frome Town Council, funded by the National Lottery’s Climate Action Fund.

  • Cheese and Grain could become greenest venue in the West

The Cheese and Grain could become the West Country’s first carbon-neutral live music venue, as the venue seeks to apply for planning permission to create more off-grid electricity on site and install battery storage.

Solar panels were installed at the venue in 2013 by Frome Town Council, which holds the lease for the building. The infrastructure has helped to reduce the venue’s carbon footprint, with an estimated saving of £250,000 on energy bills and £90,000 recovered by Frome Town Council from selling excess electricity back to the grid.

Now, the venue wants to go even further and create the West Country’s first carbon-neutral live music venue.

Director of the Cheese and Grain, Steve Macarthur, said, “It’s a daunting ambition, with some technical challenges but the benefits are huge and it will also help to offset the tens of thousands of car journeys the venue generates each year.

  • Frome hiker raises £6,000 for four charities by trekking 325 miles

A Local man has raised nearly £6,000 for charity by completing four long-distance treks since 2017.

Tom Ayres has walked a total of 325 miles across the four challenges – some solo and others with friends – raising funds for Cancer Research UK, local cancer counselling charity We Hear You, The Sick Children’s Trust and a charity supporting children with diabetes.

“I like the idea of creating a challenge and pushing yourself to the limit, and I also like the endurance side of it where you have to really dig deep,” said Tom. “People can also relate to walking. I enjoy walking anyway, and it’s a nice way to see the local countryside.”

When Tom completed his first trek in 2017, he and some friends hiked along the Two Moors Way – a long-distance trail in Devon – raising money for a juvenile diabetes charity and local cancer counselling charity We Hear You.

  • ‘We Will Rock You’ - musical theatre group gets set for summer performance

Tickets are on sale for this year’s Frome Musical Theatre Company youth production, We Will Rock You, at the Frome Memorial Theatre.

We Will Rock You follows two rebels on a quest to save rock ’n’ roll in a post-apocalyptic world where there are no musical instruments and rock ’n’ roll has died.

“Watch our heroes, Galileo and Scaramouche, as they team up with a group of societal outcasts, the Bohemians, to take back the iPlanet from the all-powerful Globalsoft, led by the Killer Queen,” said Sarah Doble, a member of the theatre company. “Join them as they fight for freedom, individuality and the resurrection of music.

“The cast of young Bohemians are in school years 3 to 11 and have put the show together in a short time over the summer.”

  • New survey launched for community organisations and charities

Community groups and social enterprises are invited to take part in a new survey designed to capture the funding needs, challenges and strengths of Frome’s vibrant voluntary and community sector.

The survey, being run by Frome Town Council and Locality UK, is open to a wide range of not-for-profit organisations, including clubs, community groups, charities, social enterprises, arts organisations, community venues and more – of all sizes.

“We know that community organisations and social enterprises are working harder than ever to support local people – often with limited resources. This survey is a chance for us to listen, learn, and explore how future funding and support can best meet the needs of Frome’s voluntary and community sector,” said Johannes Moeller from Locality UK, a national membership network supporting community organisations, who have been commissioned to carry out this anonymous survey.

  • Supergrass play sold-out gig to support community campaign.

Britpop icons Supergrass took to the stage at a packed Cheese and Grain delivering a fundraising gig in support of the local campaign to save Packsaddle Fields from development.

The sell-out show, which was a headline Frome Festival event, took place on Friday 11th July with support from local indie band Lumley.

All ticket sale proceeds are being donated to People for Packsaddle’s fundraising campaign. The group is urgently trying to raise £10,000 to cover legal costs in their effort to prevent development on Packsaddle Fields, located on the northern edge of Frome.

Supergrass drummer Danny Goffey, who lives in Frome, supports the campaign. The band performed their debut album I Should Coco in full to mark its 30th anniversary, followed by a selection of their well-known songs, including Alright, Caught by the Fuzz, and Mansize Rooster.

  • Roll up! Roll up! Frome Carnival Family Funday this month

The Frome Carnival Family Funday will be held on Saturday 19th July at Victoria Park.

The day will feature all the usual favourites including local stalls from groups and charities, the dog show, bonniest baby competition and the selection of this year’s carnival royalty.

Organiser, Mandy Morgan said, “We are looking forward to holding the event and welcoming the community to join us for all the usual activities and performances from Frome groups.”

New to the fun day this year is the carnival team’s very own ride-on train. “We were previously borrowing the Lions’ train. Harry, our shed manager, had the opportunity to purchase a ride-on lawnmower, and he’s done it up into a train. It looks great.”

With around a £2,000 shortfall this year, the carnival team are keen to raise as much money as possible at this year’s Family Fun Day. “We really need a good fun day,” said Mandy. “The Food Festival has very kindly let us have a stall where we sell cakes, and we usually make some money there too. We are also hoping to hold a few bingo events.”
