MEMBERS of Frome Cricket Club are shocked and saddened after discovering significant damage to the pitch covers, two weeks ago.
Vice-president, Nick Larder, was informed of the vandalism after the volunteer groundsman noticed the damage on Sunday the 26th July.
Nick said, “We are deeply saddened by what has happened. It’s so frustrating to think people would purposely damage something that belongs to the cricket club. It’s mindless vandalism and there’s no need for it.
“I was at the club quite late on the Saturday night, probably until midnight and the groundsman got to the pitch at around 7am Sunday morning, so the vandalism most likely occurred between those hours. People quite often use the pitch as a cut through on their way home from the town. This has been a concern for us for a long time, but what do we do?
“We thought about putting a fence around the pitch but the club has been the same for 100 years, we don’t want to change it because of mindless vandals.
“It affects the whole town, not just the players and the management. There’s a lot of hard work that goes into fundraising by the community so we can buy equipment for the club. And this sort of thing ruins it for everyone.
“We’ve only had the covers for 10 weeks as part of our commitment to improve cricket and community facilities for the town. We cannot believe that people would do this and are dismayed that such a mindless minority can cause such damage and financial hurt to a community, not-for-profit based sports club.”
