THE Frome Textile Workshop have donated £10,000 to Frome College to support learning opportunities within the crafts of weaving, spinning and dyeing.
The money has been donated after Jane Lewis – teacher, organiser and founder member of the Workshop – retired last summer. In recognition of her dedicated contribution, the members have voted to make £10,000 of the Workshop funds available to establish a bursary in Jane’s name, to support learning opportunities within weaving, spinning and dyeing.
Textile Workshop is a local group of weavers, spinners and dyers who are helping to keep the crafts alive and pass on skills.
The Workshop was based at the college for 20 years and then for three years at the United Reform Church. It is now temporarily located in a much smaller space in the Sunday school at Chapel Barton.
Mr Ball, Frome College Principal said, “We are delighted to have received the donation and the money will be made available to textile students through a bursary scheme. The college is proud to have been a home to the Workshop for 20 years. We sincerely hope the Workshop is able to continue in Frome for the benefit of the community.”
The Workshop needs a permanent home if it is to continue to offer a resource for the whole community and play a part in keeping the skills of weaving, spinning and dyeing alive. Please contact Laila Jhaveri on 07930 278445 if you have any ideas or suggestions or you are able to help support the Workshop in any way or with fundraising.
