Nifty Needles, a group who meet at the Fair Frome Centre behind the Town Hall twice monthly, was started in 2018 by Lynda Campbell and Barbara Bacon for anyone who wants to be, or learn to be creative with needles! They incorporate knitting, crochet, sewing and friendship.
The group made Easter chicks and Christmas stockings, helped by the Blue House Knit and Natter group and the Library group. These were filled with chocolates, funded by the Rotary Club of Frome and friends of the group, for the Food Bank to put in the bags given out to families over Easter and Christmas. They also contributed to the Remembrance Day display with the poppies around the Town Hall.
They have now embarked on supporting Project Linus, making blankets and quilts to give warmth, comfort and security to sick or distressed children – “A quilt is a hug you can keep” is their motto. This project has been providing quilts and blankets since 2000 to children nationwide, in hospitals, hospices, special schools, foster and social care, bereavement centres and other outlets. Last year 619 quilts, 298 blankets, 17 incubator covers, 22 pairs of bonding sheets and 56 memory bags were distributed in the Bath & Wells area.
The photograph shows Nifty Needles members handing over their first blankets and quilts to the local Project Linus co-ordinator – Linda McGregor who can be contacted on : linda.somerset@gmail.com or 01761 752337. Also shown is the box of Easter chicks, complete with their crème eggs, ready to go out in the food bags over Easter.
If anyone would like to donate machine washable yarn or fabric for Nifty Needles to use or would like to join the group, please come to the Fair Frome Centre on the 2nd or 4th Thursdays in the month, between 10.30-12.30pm.
