Farmers Market at the Frome Cheese & Grain

FROME has over the last few years been punching above its weight on the food scene with amazing food outlets, cafes and the nationally-renowned Frome Independent, of which Somerset Farmers market runs its own food section.

However, many newcomers to the town don’t realise that the original Frome Farmers’ Market has now been running at the Cheese & Grain for nearly two decades and takes place on the second Saturday of the month from 9am-1pm. The next market is running this Saturday 14th October.

The market has held close to its original principles of enabling farmers and food producers to develop a strong local customer base. Over the years the market has helped to launch many award-winning food businesses whilst developing and valuing trusting relationships between customer and producer.

This coming Saturday sees the expanded market open with more stallholders selling fresh, high quality produce. For those new to Frome or who have never been to the Somerset Farmers’ market, Saturday is the chance to find out what they have been missing. Saturday’s Farmers’ Market will also be welcoming their new sponsor and supporter, law firm Thatcher + Hallam LLP.

This October sees the market open for the Frome public to experience an expanded range of new producers such as The Teeny Greeny Urban micro farm, Sagebury’s savoury gluten free range, organic sourdough loaves, alongside many well established traditional local family farms and vegetable growers.

Live music will become a regular feature and there will be a jute eco-bag giveaway to customers on the day. Many stalls offer tasters and children and families are made particularly welcome. With an excellent café on site it’s a great morning out, there is adjacent parking and even a cash machine!

Organisers also plan a series of talks in November by a handful of the farmers to give an insight into their production methods and ethos. They also look forward to two seasonal Christmas markets on December 9th and 20th.

  • Planning a 2026 wedding? Local fayre to offer inspiration and advice

Couples planning to get married in 2026 are being invited to a special Wedding Fayre at The White Horse View in Westbury, this month.

Taking place on Saturday 28th February from 11.30am to 3.30pm, the Fayre will give couples the chance to explore the venue, meet trusted suppliers and gather inspiration for their special day.

Set beneath the iconic Westbury White Horse, The White Horse View provides a breathtaking countryside backdrop and a flexible, contemporary space for weddings of all styles. The Wedding Fayre will showcase the venue dressed for a celebration, allowing guests to experience its potential first-hand and meet wedding planners, florists, photographers, stylists and entertainment providers, all on hand to offer ideas and practical advice.

The event will also highlight The Kingston Group’s expanding wedding portfolio, including its exclusive partnership with The Hall Estate in Bradford‑on‑Avon, a Grade I listed Jacobean mansion described as one of the finest historic houses in the region. Through this link, couples can choose between a contemporary celebration in Westbury or a heritage setting at The Hall Estate, supported by bespoke planning, catering and event coordination.

  • Asda driver praised for saving customer’s life

An Asda delivery driver in Frome has been praised for saving the life of a 77-year-old customer who fell in his bathroom and banged his head.

Local resident Roger, who suffers from arthritis, had been lying on the floor for nine hours, unable to raise the alarm, until driver Paul Parsons arrived with his weekly groceries.

Paul sensed something was wrong when Roger did not answer the door when he knocked as usual. After he noticed a light was on upstairs, he shouted through the letterbox for Roger and heard his muffled shouts for help. Paul quickly alerted emergency services and got hold of Roger’s neighbours, who managed to get inside the house and helped him look after Roger until an ambulance arrived.

  • Eagles of Death Metal bring 20th anniversary tour to Frome

Global Rock band Eagles of Death Metal are performing in Frome in November.

The band from Palm Desert in California will be playing at the Cheese and Grain on Monday 23rd November, as part of a special anniversary tour celebrating 20 years of their iconic album ‘Death by Sexy.’

“Founded by Joshua Homme, of Queens of the Stone Age and best friend Jessie Hughes, the band, despite its name, is not a death metal band with the name intended to be humorous,” said the Cheese and Grain.

“The band’s live performances are a sight to be seen. Jessie Hughes is known for his over-the-top stage histrionics and evangelistic interaction with his fans.”

The show is the final night of the band’s European tour. The venue says this means Frome and the Cheese and Grain are ‘firmly on the international touring map.’

Programme, Production and Marketing Manager for the Cheese and Grain Rob Dahl said, “We’re absolutely thrilled to be welcoming the legendary Eagles of Death Metal to Frome this November. For a town of our size, having a band of their international standing choose to play here as part of the 20th anniversary tour for their biggest record is incredibly exciting. It’s a real statement moment, not just for the venue but for Frome as a whole."

Tickets for Cheese and Grain Friends Pre-Sale is on Thursday 26th February.

General On Sale tickets will be on Friday 27th February at 10am via https://buff.ly/hUndop0

  • Frome Palestine activists welcome High Court ruling

Three women from Frome, who face terrorism charges for protesting with Palestine Action last year, have welcomed a High Court ruling that could see the charges dropped.

The women were arrested during protests in Bristol and London, which the campaign group says were peaceful, where they sat silently holding placards reading, “I oppose genocide. I support Palestine Action.”

The protests, organised by campaign group Defend Our Juries, have led to the arrests of more than 2,700 people after Parliament declared Palestine Action an unlawful group and criminalised supporting it under anti-terrorism law. The government’s ruling followed damage being caused to two military aircraft after activists broke into an RAF base last year.

On 13th February, High Court judges ruled that the ban on Palestine Action is unlawful, meaning the Frome women’s charges could be revoked and they are awaiting the final outcome.

  • Council leader shares cancer diagnosis and urges Frome to support WHY

The leader of Frome Town Council, Cllr Fiona Barrows, has urged the community to support cancer counselling charity, We Hear You, following her breast cancer diagnosis.

Cllr Barrows shared news of her diagnosis at the Full Council meeting on Wednesday 18th February.

She said, “I’m joining you remotely this evening because I was diagnosed with breast cancer last month. It is on both sides and in both sets of lymph nodes, which means treatment will be intensive and extensive, starting with six months of chemotherapy and immunotherapy.

“The timing of this diagnosis is, if I’m honest, heartbreaking. I think you all know how much I love being in this role as Leader and Chair and how much I love this town. There is so much work under way, so much momentum and so much more I want to do.

“Thank you to my fellow councillors and to all of Frome Town Council staff for your support over the past few weeks, it has really meant so much to me. And thank you now for going out of your way to make sure I can attend meetings online and continue to be effective in my role, even at a slight distance. I really do appreciate it.”

  • Frome Town Council sets budget and outlines priorities

Frome Town Council has agreed its budget for the coming year, setting out how it will deliver the priorities in its Council Plan 2025–27.

Councillors voted by majority to an increase of 6.8% to the town council’s share of council tax for 2026-27. For 89% of residents, this represents an average increase of 32p per week, or a total cost of £5.05 per week.

The precept of £3,023,126 includes £90,000 allocated for play equipment, £67,000 for Market Yard toilets, £80,000 for community grants and over £1.8 million on staffing costs.

The council says the budget and council strategy have both been informed by residents’ priorities, gathered via last year’s ‘Building a Picture of Frome’ project, surveys, pop-up engagement events and other channels of communication.

Leader and Chair of Frome Town Council, Cllr Fiona Barrows, said, “We know how tough things are for many people right now, and we don’t take any increase lightly. We have gone through every single line of this budget with real care, knowing that residents are under real pressure. There have been detailed discussions about areas of work and every pound we are proposing to spend. We have done everything we can to keep our costs down – budgeting carefully, responsibly, and compassionately – with the long-term interests of Frome in mind.”

  • Film night to explore how communities can power their future

Residents are invited to a film screening of a documentary about what happens when neighbours come together to take power, organised by Frome Town Council.

A screening of Power Station will take place at the Merlin Theatre on Saturday 28th February at 7pm followed by a post-screening discussion.

Organisers say, “Filmmakers Hilary Powell and Dan Edelstyn set out to turn their Walthamstow street into a solar-powered mini power station. The film is as much about people as it is about energy, showing how curiosity, creativity and collaboration, with a little daring thrown in, can spark real change.

  • Meet the author behind gambling and addiction book

An author of a true story about gambling and addiction will share her experience at a ‘Meet the Author’ event at St John’s Church on 6th March.

Dianne Sangster, who wrote ‘Flutter’, will give an honest and open account of one couple’s experience of living with gambling addiction and finding help, hope and recovery.

Organisers say, “The evening will start with a conversation between Eleanor Talbot and Dianne about

‘Flutter’, her true story of a young Aussie teacher who falls for a single dad in London, a secret gambler. Then Dianne will read a short extract.

“There are many challenges along the way, including losing their home and being stuck in the private rented sector, the importance of friendships, cultural differences, living with illness and facing death but much joy and love and laughter.”

  • From The Mayor

A lot of my time recently has been taken up with hospitals and medical appointments for me and my family.

Along with many other people, it makes me so grateful that we have our wonderful NHS in this country and even more importantly, a fantastic service from our nearby RUH, our own local hospital and of course our fabulous Frome Medical Practice (FMP).

We’re particularly lucky in that FMP is extremely interested in our community and has so many things to offer. Apart from a warm cup of coffee at the cafe on a winter’s morning, they run many groups for physical and mental health, they support their health workers who operate within our community and they have done an extraordinary amount in the town to reduce loneliness and isolation.

Health is something we often take for granted if we’re lucky to be in good health. There are lots of things we can do in our daily lives, like walking and cycling activities, yoga groups, meditation, sports clubs and even more social options like learning a new skill, learning more about nature or joining one of our craft sheds. All these things get us out of the house, allow us to escape into another world and offer a wonderful way to connect with new friends. The Discover Frome website is a great place to find information about groups near you – or to advertise them, if you run one!
