FROME has over the last few years been punching above its weight on the food scene with amazing food outlets, cafes and the nationally-renowned Frome Independent, of which Somerset Farmers market runs its own food section.
However, many newcomers to the town don’t realise that the original Frome Farmers’ Market has now been running at the Cheese & Grain for nearly two decades and takes place on the second Saturday of the month from 9am-1pm. The next market is running this Saturday 14th October.
The market has held close to its original principles of enabling farmers and food producers to develop a strong local customer base. Over the years the market has helped to launch many award-winning food businesses whilst developing and valuing trusting relationships between customer and producer.
This coming Saturday sees the expanded market open with more stallholders selling fresh, high quality produce. For those new to Frome or who have never been to the Somerset Farmers’ market, Saturday is the chance to find out what they have been missing. Saturday’s Farmers’ Market will also be welcoming their new sponsor and supporter, law firm Thatcher + Hallam LLP.
This October sees the market open for the Frome public to experience an expanded range of new producers such as The Teeny Greeny Urban micro farm, Sagebury’s savoury gluten free range, organic sourdough loaves, alongside many well established traditional local family farms and vegetable growers.
Live music will become a regular feature and there will be a jute eco-bag giveaway to customers on the day. Many stalls offer tasters and children and families are made particularly welcome. With an excellent café on site it’s a great morning out, there is adjacent parking and even a cash machine!
Organisers also plan a series of talks in November by a handful of the farmers to give an insight into their production methods and ethos. They also look forward to two seasonal Christmas markets on December 9th and 20th.
