Father Christmas gets ready for a fundraising journey around Frome

Father Christmas has asked the members of the Frome Lions and Rotary clubs to help him when he visits the residents of Frome and surrounding villages again this December.

In the run up to Christmas, he will be doing the rounds once again with the Frome Lions and Rotary Clubs’ Santa Sleigh, starting on Monday 2nd December when he will travel around the Stonebridge area starting at Briar Close.

“Father Christmas is very pleased with the float, which was provided by the team at John Wainwright and Company two years ago. He has kindly been offered the services of Recovery Frome this year, not that he expects to call on their services, but thanks Simon and the team for being available to help if required,” said a member of the Rotary Club of Frome, Richard Lines.

In addition to being able to visit roads previously too tight for the old float, he will be visiting additional roads that have opened up since his visit last year.

The float will be out for 17 days throughout December, finishing on Saturday 21st December before Father Christmas heads off to Lapland to complete preparations for the big day on the 25th.

“Father Christmas would like to remind all of the young children, which he loves, to post their handwritten letters, which can be posted in the post box on the float,” said Richard.

“Rest assured, boys and girls, that Father Christmas will, as usual, be reading all your letters in time for the delivery of presents, but please make sure you include your name and address so that his helpers can send a response to your letter.

“Father Christmas will be keeping us all informed of his outings and any updates on his dedicated Facebook page, linked at the end of the story.”

Helpers from Lions and Rotary Clubs of Frome will be out this year collecting your generous donations that will go to help many ‘deserving causes’ in and around Frome.

“We understand times are difficult and we appreciate any support that you can give. We will make sure it is used to support those in our community who are in desperate need of support,” says Richard.

“Father Christmas is very keen that we keep up with technology and this year we will have some collectors carrying contactless donation points. One great benefit is the ability to claim Gift Aid if you are a UK taxpayer, which will increase your donation by 25% and make your generosity go further. These collectors will wear distinctive white hi-vis jackets.”

Treasurer for Frome Rotary Club, Norman Elmer, said, “Another great benefit of an individual making a Gift Aid declaration is that we can use this donation to claim Gift Aid on the bucket collection, which can double the benefit of such kind donations.”

Mobile phone users can also donate by text. To donate, text SANTAFROME and either 1,3,5,10 or 20 to 70085.

In addition, there is a JustGiving web page where donations can be made using the link enclosed at the end of the story

Kim Barter, president of Frome Rotary, said, “The funds raised, which are split with the Lions, have all been used to support our ‘Frome Deserving Causes’ account, which has supported many groups, charities, families and individuals around Frome this year.”

President of Frome Lions, Dan Norris, said, “We are absolutely delighted to be able to run the float around Frome and surrounding villages again this year. We are planning to bring a heap of seasonal joy and excitement to brighten up everyone in the community as Christmas approaches.”

So that you can see where Father Christmas is as he travels around Frome with his helpers this year you can track him at   https://glympse.com/!santafrome

The team will publish this link online and on the Frome Rotary and Lions websites, as well as all social media pages. Don’t forget that there will be times when there is no phone signal and the tracker may not be available but we expect most of the routes to be visible on the tracker.

  • Frome gin stocked in nationwide supermarket chain

A Frome distillery is set to reach a national audience, with two of its products stocked in Co-op stores across the UK.

Still Sisters has been selected for Co-op’s Apiary programme, which supports and helps small brands grow and reach a wider audience.

Founded by Tori Jordan and Hannah Smith, Still Sisters will see its Somerset Cider Gin & Tonic and Pink Gin Fizz stocked nationwide, marking the brand’s first supermarket listing.

“We’ve always wanted to take the spirit of Somerset further afield,” said Tori Jordan. “Our Somerset Cider Gin & Tonic is made with locally pressed cider apples; it’s our love letter to the county. To now see it on Co-op shelves across the country is a dream come true.”

An afternoon disco is being held next month in Frome with a chance to relive music from the 1970s and 80s.

The event is in the Assembly Rooms at the Memorial Theatre on 6th December from 3pm.

“Remember the famous Frome Hexagon Suite from the 1970s?” asks Jackie Moss from the Memorial. “Why not relive those nostalgic times with a chance to strut your moves on the dance floor to hits such as Saturday Night Fever, Dancing Queen and Come on Eileen?"

  • A hopeful vision of a future Frome

Residents were invited to envision a ‘Frome of the near future’ recently, when environmental campaigner, writer and activist Rob Hopkins launched his new book in town.

The launch of his book ‘How to Fall in Love with the Future: A Time Traveller’s Guide to Changing the World’, involved a daytime workshop followed by an evening ‘in conversation’ with Rob at the Cheese and Grain, organised by Frome Town Council.

Participants were encouraged to envision a Frome of the near future, with a focus on possibility, imagination and optimism, making a choice to say ‘yes, and’ instead of ‘yes, but’, even in the face of the enormous challenge of climate change. The approach is detailed in his latest book.

  • The Unravelling Wilburys ride into town this month

Following an extensive summer tour that drew sell-out audiences all the way to Aberdeen and back, local band, the Unravelling Wilburys, will be returning to the Memorial Theatre this month.

The Unravelling Wilburys claim the debatable backstory of being five Nashville-born brothers who had their act stolen by the 80s supergroup, The Traveling Wilburys. Having taken back their act, they now include many songs from each of the Traveling Wilburys back catalogue. Expect the best of Roy Orbison, Tom Petty, George Harrison, Jeff Lynne and Bob Dylan.

Thinly disguised as Walter and Willie Wilbury are two familiar Frome names, John Freeman and Martin Dimery, who met when teachers at Frome College.

  • Local artists to sell work at festive market

A seasonal festive market featuring the work of local artists and craftspeople will run over the first weekend of December.

The market, which launched last year, is organised by Frome Open Art Trail and will include individual and original works from local artists and craftspeople with a range of textiles, jewellery, paintings, cards, glass, ceramics and more. It will run at The Bennett Centre on Vicarage Street from Saturday 6th to Sunday 7th December, coinciding with the Frome Independent Market.

Sue Willis of Frome Open Art Trail said, “In the beautiful Bennett Centre, visitors will have a unique opportunity to meet a varied selection of artists and makers from the summer Frome Open Art Trail, browse their beautiful work and find some unique gifts.

“The market is open Saturday from 10am to 5pm and Sunday from 10am to 4pm, prime holiday shopping time!”

  • Charlie and the Chocolate Factory coming to The Merlin

A world of pure imagination is set to come to The Merlin Theatre this December to mark the end of the venue’s celebratory 50th anniversary.

Residents are invited to a musical theatre production of Roald Dahl’s beloved story, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, opening on 4th December. Keep an eye on local and social media to find out which shops in Frome will be stocking the special, limited edition Merlin Wonka bar.

Almost 50 local people have given their time and skills to the dazzling stage production, which will bring to life the enchanting story of Charlie Bucket and the mysterious confectioner Willy Wonka.

All the on-stage roles are being played by local community actors, aged seven to 68. The child performers, divided into two teams playing on alternate nights, were selected from over 50 youngsters who braved the audition process in July.
