FROME kicked off the festive season when hundreds of people took to the streets for the Christmas Extravaganza and the switching on of the town’s Christmas lights on Saturday.
The Extravaganza saw something for all the family, with the arrival of Father Christmas and his reindeer, a variety of stalls held by local groups and organisations, and carol singing. The Cheese and Grain was packed with craft stalls while Frome Town Youth band accompanied the community carol singing in the Market Place.
As it turned dark, the town’s Christmas lights were officially switched on by eight-year-old Eva Morrissey, who won the Mayor’s Christmas card competition. Second place went to Jamie Kiel and in third place was Bella Hunter.
The Mayor of Frome cllr Pippa Goldfinger said, “The event was a big success. There was a great atmosphere and it was as if people in Frome all pulled together to celebrate the festive season. There was a lot of Christmas spirit in the air.
“I met lots of parents of young children who were having a lovely time. There were events for all the family.
“There was a lot of positive feedback. I heard from a couple of people from Bristol who had travelled to Frome because they had heard about our shops and arts scene.”
This year’s event, organised by Frome Town Council and Frome Chamber of Commerce encouraged local shops and businesses to take part, with many staying open late.
Carrying on with the festive spirit, Frome Super Market also took place in the town centre on Sunday 2nd of December. The Super Market combined the town’s Artisan, Flea and weekly markets, turning the centre of town into a huge open-air market.
The town centre was packed out as people browsed a variety of stalls, picking up unique Christmas gifts along the way.
