Frome’s first international work experience student, Luisa Kollak from Murrhardt, Germany battled the Beast from the East, to complete her two-week work placement at Dennis Maps.
This initiative is part of Frome Town Council’s ‘International Work Experience’ project to enable young people to access work experience in any one of the twin towns. Over the course of her time at Dennis Maps, Luisa was shown the workings of the company, learning all about the printing process and custom-maps department and was even treated to a trip to Southampton to see how map data is gathered at Ordinance Survey.
“We really enjoyed hosting Luisa for her work experience placement and she has conducted herself perfectly,” said Steve Burry, the managing director of Dennis Maps. “Luisa showed great interest in our business and made a few friends along the way too – all in all, a very positive experience for all involved.”
While in Frome, Luisa jumped head first into many of the exciting events happening around the town. She attended the Glitter Ball at the Cheese & Grain, tried some sticky toffee pudding at Nunney and on Saturday 10th March, she even donned a high-vis jacket and took part in Frome Busks as a steward!
To get the full Frome experience, Luisa stayed with two host families. One was based in the town centre (offering a great chance to be close to all the fun events) and the other was in the countryside where she was able to take in the beauty of the surrounding neighbourhood.
Luisa said she had a fantastic time in Frome and expressed her thanks to Dennis Maps, her host families and to the Frome Twinning Association for all the support and kindness she received. She says she will almost certainly be back.
If you’re a Frome resident between the ages of 18-25 and would like to take part in a similar experience, the application for Murrhardt-based work experience is now open. More information and details can be found via www.frometowncouncil .gov.uk
