A Frome football team has dramatically increased its player numbers by appearing on a local radio show.
A volunteer production team from Frome FM, the town’s community radio station, recently visited the Frome Town Ladies FC and increased the club’s membership overnight.
A recent addition to Frome FM’s on-air schedule is the Request Stop show. In the words of its husband and wife production team, Kerry and Andy Brittain, “Request Stop brings you an hour of nostalgic popular music from the 20th Century. Send us your requests and memories and we will search Andy’s ridiculously large record collection, if we have it, we’ll play it!”
But the show is not just a write-in or phone-in request show, it’s also about featuring local groups and organisations – and getting their requests too. Request Stop’s presenter, Kerry Brittain, recently visited Frome Town Ladies FC, where she interviewed players and managers and took their song requests and dedications. The show aired five days later and immediately there was an unprecedented rise in new players signing for the club.
Adrian Petteford, the club secretary says, “We took the opportunity to reach out to the community via Frome FM to find desperately-needed new players. We are absolutely over the moon with the response we have had. Five new players came to training and were signed up on the night, meaning that our depleted reserves team was able to play with a full squad on Saturday. This has given the team a much-needed morale boost and we all had a great time making the show.”
Request Stop goes out on Frome FM on the last Sunday of the month at 12.00pm and can be found as a podcast on the Frome.fm website.
You can hear Frome FM’s programmes by tuning in to 96.6fm or going to the website, where all the shows are broadcast live and stored for replay at www.frome.fm. You can contact Request Stop’s production team on requeststopfm@gmail.com or tweet them on @requeststopFM.
