  • Nine-year-old boy cycles 153 miles for heart charity in memory of dad A nine-year-old boy has raised over £2,000 for the British Heart Foundation by cycling 153 miles in memory of his dad, Sam Oatley, who died in 2024 from a heart attack. Lewis Oatley, who goes to Vallis First School, completed 29 bike rides in and around Frome throughout June to raise funds for the cardiovascular research charity. Initially, Lewis set out to cycle 100 miles but ended up exceeding his target. “He cycled near enough every day in June,” said his mum, Caroline. “It worked out that he cycled just over five miles every day. “He would cycle to school on his bike and then cycle home and do an extra loop. He’s gone down the lanes by us and then longer rides by the cycle paths; he’s gone to football training and around the track there; he was doing extra laps before school and after. In the evenings we would just go and do six miles on the country lanes around Berkley.” Speaking about his challenge, Lewis gave a presentation recently in assembly at school. “In his own words, he said it had been fun and exciting and some of the journeys were tiring,” said Caroline. “There were a couple of times when he said his legs were tired, but he has been so motivated to get on his bike and hasn’t moaned once. One day he did 13 miles and then got up and went out again with his brother around the green."   • Frome Town FC kicks off new era with fresh ownership and big community plans Frome Town Football Club has entered an exciting new chapter, with a change in ownership, fresh leadership and a renewed focus on the community and long-term sustainability. The club has been acquired by FTFC Ltd., and American businessman Courtney Fong has been named the new chair of Frome Town FC (pending FA approval). Courtney, who brings a strong background in leadership and community development, promises to usher in a new era of openness, engagement and financial stability. Courtney, who is based in the USA, represents a growing trend of American involvement in English football following in the footsteps of several Premier League and Football League clubs. “This is more than a change in ownership; it’s a fresh start built on the passion and pride of our supporters and community,” said Courtney. “We’re committed to making Frome Town FC a club that thrives on and off the pitch, with a home that’s open and welcoming to all.” Lease approved Frome Town Council has also approved a new lease for Badgers Hill stadium and grounds. The lease has been granted to Badgers Hill Ltd., a company owned by FTFC Ltd. The council will be leasing out the site for £32,000 per annum for 23 years with an option to buy during that time.   • Frome residents raise over £5,000 to support families in Palestine Frome residents have raised over £5,000 to support families affected by the ongoing conflict in Gaza and the West Bank. A series of community-led fundraising initiatives included a sponsored walk/run challenge, a bake sale, and a town centre march. As part of a national initiative, Striding for Palestine, 15 local residents walked, ran or jogged a symbolic 107km between 15th May (Nakba Day – the annual day of commemoration for Palestinians) and 15th June. “The distance represents the journey between Occupied East Jerusalem and Gaza,” explained Angelique, one of the participants. “This virtual challenge, undertaken in aid of Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP), highlights the physical and emotional distances Palestinians are forced to endure, while raising critical funds for life-saving medical support.” Throughout the month, participants tracked their progress on a virtual map reflecting the recent history of Gaza and the West Bank. “Medical Aid for Palestinians works for the health and dignity of Palestinians living under occupation and as refugees, providing immediate medical aid and supporting the long-term development of Palestinian healthcare systems,” added Angelique.   • Frome Town preseason fixtures kick off next week Frome Town’s preseason gets underway next week with a short hop across the border to play Warminster Town of the Western League on Wednesday, 9th July before a visit to Bath to face Odd Down on Saturday 12th. Another trip to Bath follows for a clash with Oldland Abbotonians on Wednesday, 16th July at The Lew Hill Memorial Ground. More away days follow with trips to Bournemouth Poppies and Mangotsfield United on Saturday 19th and Wednesday 23rd before the Robins pit their wits against National League side Chippenham Town in BA11 on 26th July. Preparations will come to a head with a testing encounter in South Gloucestershire against the newly-promoted Yate Town of the Southern Prem on the first Saturday of August. Read more on our website.   • Orchardleigh Golf Club charity and cup matches Members of Orchardleigh Golf Club took part in a Texas Scramble recently to raise money for Somerset & Dorset Air Ambulance in memory of a long-standing member who died in January this year. Ted Bullock was a long-standing member of Orchardleigh Seniors and was well-loved within the club. The first attempt at holding this competition had to be postponed because of bad weather in late May but it was rearranged for Wednesday 18th June which turned out to be a beautiful warm day. Of the eight teams which took part, the winning three on count back were Susan Marshall, Dave Edwards and Mike Bradbury. In second place was Mike Passingham, Rachel Priddle and Phil Banks-Welch. The club members were very generous with their donations and the event raised £126.50 for the Somerset & Dorset Air Ambulance, a charity that was very close to Ted’s heart. His widow Diana was delighted at the amount raised in Ted’s memory. The ladies’ section took part in the two round Vincent Cup, which is played on consecutive Sundays.   • Frome RFC appoints new assistant coach Frome RFC has appointed new assistant coach for the upcoming 2025/26 season. Henry Bull has been a committed and influential member of the senior squad for the past five seasons. Known for his intelligent play and leadership on the pitch, Henry’s transition into the coaching team is a natural progression and one welcomed by players and supporters alike. He said, “I’m hugely appreciative of the opportunity that Frome RFC has given me to work for the coaching staff. I’m really looking forward to the season and all the challenges it’s going to bring. We’ve got a cracking squad, with loads of new talent coming through the academy, bring on the season.” Henry will work alongside head coach Garrie Webster, who continues to lead the club with passion and a clear vision for progress.   • Local coach crowned British and English triathlon age-group champion A Frome athlete has been crowned British and English National Champion in the sprint distance triathlon in the 40 to 44-year-old age group. Paul Ryman, a seasoned triathlete with nearly 20 years of racing experience, competed on 8th June in the British and English National Championships at Blenheim Palace. The event consisted of a 750m open water swim, a 20km bike ride and a 5.5km run. Paul crossed the finish line first in his age group, securing both the English and British national titles for 2025. “Blenheim is a stunning venue – racing in the beautiful grounds surrounding the palace is something truly special,” said Paul, who now holds his second British title. “This race was my main focus for 2025 and I am absolutely thrilled to have achieved my goal.” Paul, who is also a triathlon coach and personal trainer, previously earned the title of Triathlon Sprint World Champion in 2019 in the 35-39 age group in the World Triathlon Age-Group Championships in Lausanne, Switzerland. www.paulrymanfitness.co.uk Read more on our website.   • Action-packed June for Frome Running Club June saw some incredible performances from Frome Running Club members, under at times challenging conditions with high temperatures throughout the month. Things got off to a speedy start on 1st June with the Gloucester 10K. Frome runner Daniel Thomson (MSEN) took to the starting line in the historic town of Crewkerne, finishing in 00:45:25. The next highlight in the June calendar was the AVR Westbury 5K, the second in the 2025 series of four races, and race three in the Wiltshire Road Race League. Frome fielded a strong team with Alexander Fisher (MV40) finishing first in 00:18:05, followed by Daniel Thomson (MSEN) in 00:20:24, Keith Vance (MV50) in 00:20:34, and Barrie Knight (MV70), whose time of 00:23:29 earned him first in age category.   • Volunteer for Frome’s Healthy Homes team Residents are invited to sign up to become Energy Champions and ensure that local people get the energy support they need. The Healthy Homes team at Frome Town Council are looking for enthusiastic and dedicated volunteers to join as Energy Champions to support people with lowering energy bills, dealing with energy debt and increasing energy efficiency and retrofitting homes. Energy advice volunteer co-ordinator, Caroline Wajsblum, said, “With just a few simple changes, most homes in Frome can be adapted into cooler spaces in summer, warmer havens in winter and drier throughout the year - helping households to save money, cut carbon, improve health and feel more comfortable every day.” Healthy Homes is part of Green and Healthy Frome, a collaboration between Frome Medical Practice, Edventure and Frome Town Council, and funded by the National Lottery’s Climate Action Fund (CAF). The team is also supported by the Centre for Sustainable Energy and the Centre for Energy Equality. Caroline said, “Joining the crew means becoming part of a friendly and supportive team. Full training will be provided and hours of volunteering, whether daytime or evening, can be flexible so everyone is very welcome. “As an Energy Champion you will provide energy advice to groups and individuals with initiatives such as regular drop-in energy sessions, pop up outreach events, phone calls and home visits.” Cllr Fiona Barrows said, “If you can spare some time and would like to make a difference to people’s lives in our town, reducing their energy bills and lowering their carbon footprint, we would love to hear from you.” To ask any questions about the role or to apply send a CV and cover letter to cwajsblum@frometowncouncil.gov.uk.
