Frome 1st XI got their new league campaign off to a solid start with victory over Butleigh. On a warm day, Frome managed to pick up maximum points to claim 1st place and week one.
After winning the toss, new Frome captain Mark Sanger decided to bat and it looked a good decision with the side 57-1 off the 10 overs of powerplay. Paul Sanger (86) and David Dredge (51) were well set but the partnership of 88 was broken when Dredge was bowled by Bilsborough.
Smith (31) joined Sanger and they carried on playing in an attacking manner putting Butleigh under pressure with good running between the wickets. Their stand of 89 for the 3rd wicket was broken when Smith was out LBW and Sanger’s fantastic innings ended shortly after leaving Frome 190-4. Apart from another partnership of 49 from Stonell (31) and Wheeler (20), the innings faded out towards the end and the home side finished 256-9 from their 50 overs.
In reply, Butleigh started well in their chase with opener Parnell playing some lovely looking strokes. Butleigh finished their powerplay overs 50-1, Matthew Knight with the wicket on his 1st XI debut. The big wicket of Parnell (29) came with and mix up between the two batsmen and a smart piece of fielding from Mark Sanger ended in a run out.
This started a collapse from the away side, David Dredge (2-18) this time with the ball was causing the batters lots of problems and Frome turned the game away from Butleigh as they went into the drinks break at 75-6.
After the drinks break Butleigh put up bit of a fight with captain Durston (44) and vice-captain Bilsborough (29 not out) frustrating the home side.
Frome were fighting hard to bowl Butleigh out and claim maximum bowling points and the last 2 wickets came right at the death with Harman dismissing Durston to pick up his first wicket, also on his debut. Eventually Frome bowled them out for 184, Mark Sanger (2-28) claiming the wicket of Worth (0) caught and bowled to seal the win.
