The streets of Frome will come alive with the sound of young musicians as Frome College and Selwood Academy showcase their talent in Frome Busks on Saturday 22nd March.
Kicking off at 11am until 2pm, the event promises to be an exciting day for music lovers of all ages as performers take to the stage to treat passers-by to live sets across various locations around the town centre.
Millie Steel, a Year 13 student at Frome College who took part in and helped organise Frome Busks 2024, as well as performing at Frome Town Council’s 50th anniversary event last year, shared her thoughts with Cllr Sara Butler about the event and her journey as a young musician.
Q: Tell us about yourself – what year are you in at Frome College? What are you studying?
Millie: I’m currently in Year 13, studying music, music technology and maths. I plan to continue studying music at university next year.
Q: How did you get into performing?
Millie: I’ve loved performing from a young age, whether it was singing in a choir, being part of musicals, or playing in a band. More recently, I’ve been learning about live sound and really enjoying the backstage aspects of performances.
Q: Who are your musical heroes?
Millie: I listen to a wide range of music but I particularly admire artists like Amy Winehouse, Raye, and Tracy Chapman. I love their unique styles and try to incorporate that into my own performances.
Q: What can people expect at Frome Busks on 22nd March?
Millie: Frome Busks is such a brilliant event because it gives young musicians the chance to perform in a welcoming, community-driven environment. We’ll have a great mix of acoustic acts, bands and ensembles, and the whole town will be filled with music. It’s going to be an unforgettable day!
Q: What does the future hold for you? Do you plan to pursue music and performing as a career?
Millie: Absolutely! I’d love to get into event production and stage management for festivals and tours, but performing will always be a big part of my life. I want to keep performing as much as I can.
A music teacher at Frome College, Josh Hampson, said, “Our young musicians are so grateful for this incredible opportunity to gain experience performing live; it helps to build confidence and gives a real taste of what it’s like to connect with an audience. On top of that, our A-level music tech students get hands-on practical experience of event setup. It’s a win-win for all involved and we can’t wait to wow Frome yet again!”
Cllr Sara Butler said, “Frome Busks is such a fantastic showcase of our town’s musical talent. It’s wonderful to work with our local schools to nurture young performers. Whether you’re a fan of acoustic sounds, lively bands, or ensemble performances, there’s something for everyone to enjoy!
