FROME Netball Club played Pewsey in a top-of-the-table clash in their last match before Christmas and came away with a great 34-25 victory.
Pewsey started better than Frome who struggled to get the ball in to their shooters, but with great defending by Jess Read and Kathy Dredge who turned the ball over on numerous occasions, they took the lead in the first quarter by 10 goals to 7. The third quarter saw Pewsey draw level with Frome who were struggling with their footwork and making poor passes which Pewsey intercepted and capitalized on. The score at half-time was 16 all. Captain Helen Maunder came off and put Julie Merritt on at wing attack and Jess took a rest and Hannah Dredge came on at keeper and this seemed to confound Pewsey. The centre passes got to the right people; Jane Bullus and Emily Steeple managed to convert all chances at goal into scores and Hannah got the better of the Pewsey shooter who started missing. Frome raced ahead to a third quarter score of 28 goals to 20 and then in the last quarter consolidated this to win by 9 goals. A great result for Frome who did not play particularly well but still managed to win. All players contributed to this result, Meg Croker at C and Andrea McCall at wing defence but for the second week running the Player of the Match went to Emily Steeple for her outstanding shooting. Frome take a break now and resume in the New Year against Calne who are mid table in the league
