A FROME firefighter is encouraging homeowners to have their chimneys checked and swept on a regular basis to reduce the risk of fire.
Local man, Guy Lucas, was inspired to set up his own chimney sweeping business through his own experience working for Frome Fire Station as a retained firefighter.
“Frome Fire Station still attend chimney fires regularly during the burning season,” explained Guy, “but having your chimney swept and checked regularly will help reduce the chance of a chimney fire.
“If you own a solid fuel burning appliance such as an open fire, wood burner or stove, gas or oil fired appliance then it needs sweeping and checking regularly by a certified and competent chimney sweep.
“Gone are the days of climbing boys, poor working conditions and messy sweeping. Chimney sweeping has progressed over the years and so has the equipment being used. Chimney sweeps carry a variety of rods and brushes to allow flues of all types to be swept, and many chimney sweeps carry inspection cameras allowing them to identify internal problems.
“Your chimney sweep can also highlight potential risks, service your stove/woodburner, carry out repairs, remove blockages, fit bird guards/cowls and most importantly give good, safe advice around anything chimney-related.”
Offering further fire safety advice, Guy said, “Sweeping alone, isn’t the only thing that can prevent chimney fires. It is also important to only burn approved fuels, such as wood with less than 20 percent moisture. Don’t burn treated or damp wood and don’t throw any old rubbish on the fire. Store wood correctly and safely away from the stove. It is also important to ensure you have CO2 and smoke alarms installed and make sure you test them weekly.”
