Fair Frome urgently needs more food bank donations as more people rely on the service and the charity is handing out twice as much as is coming in.
The charity-run food bank is struggling to cope with the current demand and is urging people to help by donating at collection boxes in Asda, Sainsbury’s, Southern Co-operative Funeral Care at Badcox, Barnardo’s, Frome Whole Foods, Westway Co-op, and Tesco Express.
Fair Frome, which during July handed out twice as much food as was donated, urgently needs toiletries, coffee, cereal bars, long life milk, sugar, pasta sauces and soup. It also welcomes tinned foods, instant snacks, cereals, tea and rice.
The charity is totally dependent on the food donations that come from supporters in Frome and the surrounding villages.
Wendy Miller-Williams, co-ordinator at Fair Frome said, “Universal Credit was rolled out to all new claimants on 27th July. Under the new scheme, while the new benefit is being set up, claimants wait 6 weeks for payments to be put into place.
“While we know that advances can be claimed where hardship will result, we expect increased demand on the food bank.
“Fair Frome would like to ask anyone who is able to, to continue to partner with us to provide those important food donations and encourage friends and family to get on board, so that together we can continue to respond to the need on our doorstep.”
Fair Frome launched its Food Bank in October 2013 and since that time, somewhere in the region of 800 grocery bags have been distributed to people in crisis in Frome.
