FROME Friends of Palestine are hosting a talk by Professor Jason Hart called ‘Disposable children: failing to prevent Israel’s destruction of young Palestinian’s lives’, at 23 Bath Street on Tuesday 21st March.
The talk starts at 7.30pm with doors opening at 7pm. Entrance will be by donation. There will be a bar and refreshments are available.
The group say, “Jason will ask why the global humanitarian system routinely fails Palestinian children. Israeli violations of international law in respect of Palestinian children have been documented in detail over many years. These violations are born of the Israeli authorities’ profound disregard.
“The continuation of this situation for generations of Palestinian children calls into question claims by non-state and foreign-state actors to prevent violence and uphold children’s basic rights.
“This talk considers the role of Western governments and humanitarian agencies to protect the young. How do these actors avoid accountability? What does their routine failure over decades tell us about the deep-seated racism of humanitarian endeavour that renders the lives of Palestinian children of lesser worth than those of their Israeli peers?”
Jason Hart is professor of humanitarianism and development at the University of Bath, and visiting professor at the Centre for Children’s Rights, University of Geneva. He has conducted research in South Asia and the Middle East, and advised organisations that include UNICEF, Save the Children, and the Government of Canada.
His particular interest lies in the protection of displaced and conflict-affected children including Palestinian, Iraqi, Somali and Sudanese refugee children in Jordan and young Palestinians living under Israeli occupation.
