THE Frome Ladies Club has closed after 60 years, following difficulties in forming a new committee.
Chairperson Elizabeth Curtis said, “At our last meeting in November, I was sad to inform members that because the club was unable to form a new committee, we would now have to close, after 60 years of support and friendship to its members and various charities in the town.
“Over the years, as a not-for-profit club, many local charities have benefited from our fundraising and members have enjoyed lots of day and theatre trips and Christmas dinners. One of the highlights included when we were in the audience of Bruce Forsyth The Price is Right and one of our members got picked. Over the years we have welcomed lots of speakers and had many demonstrations from cooking to hypnosis at our monthly meetings; we also held outings for the children and Christmas parties as well as regularly entering and winning on the Frome Carnival Circuit.
“Members chose to donate any remaining funds to charity. The following charities have now all received their cheques – We Hear You (WHY), Dorothy House, RUH breast cancer unit, Blood Bikes, Frome Food Bank, Active and in Touch, Critchill School and Frome Stroke Support Group.
“The club whose former name was Frome Mothers Club before its merger with another club, started at the health clinic as a support for young mums. In its heyday it had 100 members and a waiting list; we met on a Wednesday evening on the last day of the month, at Christ Church Hall, then since the pandemic at Critchill School.
