A LOCAL man has returned home after walking 500 miles across a medieval pilgrimage route in Spain, raising over £1,800 for charity.
Terry Burton, who works at Hanover Gardens in Frome, walked the Camino de Santiago, a route across northern Spain. He started from St Jean Pied de Port in France and walked over the Pyrenees and across northern Spain to the city of Santiago de Compostela, in a journey which took him six weeks.
Terry said, “It was an experience I shall never forget. I met people from all over the world doing a similar thing. It was quite an intense experience as you get to know people quite intimately, so saying goodbye at Santiago was hard.”
The Camino is walked by thousands of people every year for various reasons, some religious, some as a milestone and some for just the challenge. Terry decided to do the walk after seeing the film The Way, which features the pilgrimage, combined with a desire “to get up and do something challenging.”
He said, “I hope to finish the last 100km from Santiago to Finisterre on the coast with my wife next year. She came out at the end and met some of the people I walked with, and has been inspired to do it.”
Terry would like to thank everyone who helped him raise £1,885 for the charity HemiHelp, a charity that deals with the neurological condition hemiplegia in babies and young children, with the effects similar to those of a stroke.
