More than £700,000 will be returned to a housing developer next month after funds set aside for a primary school and nursery in Edmund Park are no longer needed for that purpose.
Somerset Council has confirmed £784,446 in Section 106 funds will be returned to Persimmon Homes South West, which built the Edmund Park estate in 2019.
The money was secured through legal agreements linked to the development and allocated towards a potential primary school and nursery on land near Marigold Road.
However, the council says there are no current plans to progress a school on the site due to ‘sufficient capacity’ in local schools across Frome.
A spokesperson for Somerset Council said, “As things stand, there are still no plans to progress a primary school on the site, and no alternative proposals have been agreed. If a school is not going to be built the S106 requires us to return it along with the collected funds. However, there could be further/amended agreements to use it for other education needs or purposes, subject to discussion with the developers. As yet no alternative plans have been discussed.”
