AN OPTICIANS in Frome has launched a contact lens recycling scheme in a bid to help reduce unnecessary waste sent to landfill.
A ‘zero waste’ box from recycling company TerraCycle, which specialises in typically hard to recycle waste, can now be found at Specsavers, 19 Westway Centre.
Richard Goring, store director at Specsavers Frome, says: “We’re really pleased to offer a lens recycling point to the local community. Everyone is welcome to drop off their contact lens waste at our store – you don’t have to be a Specsavers customer, just pop in and our team will be happy to help.”
Reducing plastic waste is high on everyone’s agenda but for years contact lens wearers have struggled to find ways to dispose of lenses and packaging ethically without resorting to sending them to landfill. The specialist recycling box is suitable for used contact lenses, foil, pods and monthly contact lens cases. These are then sorted and separated into metals, fibres and plastics and recycled into a variety of items.
Richard continues, ‘It’s a small step but a simple change such as this can really help reduce an ever-growing plastic excess.”
