Frome Park men played their final mid-week Mid Somerset League match at home against top of the table Castle Cary.

The visitors came looking for the win which would put them in the play offs; on the other hand, the Park was looking for a win to finish off on a high note after a difficult campaign which has seen them lose their last four matches. The match went against the form book, with Frome making the most of the home advantage to secure an easy win and only dropping one point with a drawn rink, final score was 78 – 46, with Frome Park taking 15 points. The best winning rink for the home side was Malcolm Jepson, Les Stather, David Whitehead & Alan Totterdell who out bowled their opponents for most of the game, winning 12 of the 18 ends with a score of 23 – 10.

In the County League, both the “A” & “B” teams were in action and had the wet weather to contend with for the first time in weeks.  The “A” team played at home to current league leaders City of Wells, the match was a very close encounter with both teams leading at different stages of the contest, but it was the visitors who finished the stronger to secure a good win with a final score of 52 – 59, winning on two rinks to pick up 10 points and keep their lead at the top of the table secure.  The only winning rink for Frome for the second week running was the team of John Curtis, Kim Pitts, John Pritchard & Steve West who claimed their two points by just getting the better of their opponents to win by 20 – 17.

The “B” team had to travel away to face Knowle “C” in another very closely-fought contest, but managed to claim the win with a 51 – 56 score line, winning on two rinks to get 10 points. This was an excellent result, especially away from home.

The Ladies had a very good win in the Wild League against Norwest, managing to win on two rinks and draw on the other to pick up 11 points, the overall score was 49 – 38. The best winning triple for the Park ladies was Myra Drew, Betty Warren & Val Church. This trio played well together to overcome their opponents by 22 – 14.

The mixed team have played a couple of friendly matches, at home against Gillingham.  At halfway when the teams stopped for tea, the visitors held a narrow 3 shot lead but after tea, the Park came on strong to finally run out winners by 63 – 49.  The best winning rink was Helen Humphrey, Alan Cottle, Val Church & Richard Phillips who bowled the better to come away with a 18 – 8 victory.

This was followed by an away trip against Warminster. On this occasion Frome Park proved far too strong for their hosts by winning comfortably by 47 – 76.  Frome having three winning rinks with the home side only claiming the win on one rink.  There was two rinks who both won by 12 shots, Malcolm Jepson, Dave Butler, Phillip Puttock & Les Stather 24 – 12 and Peter Wheeler, Jim McAlpine, Clive Smith & Mike Gulliford 23 – 11.

  • Players prepare for 24-hour charity ‘bowl-a-thon’

Two members of a Frome bowls club will be rolling up their sleeves – and rolling out their bowls – for a 24-hour marathon in aid of the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance.

Frome Selwood Bowling Club’s Ladies’ Captain Kathy Kingman and Club Secretary Mike Bishop will play two back-to-back 12-hour bowls sessions on 23rd and 24th May, running from 9am to 9pm.

Spectators and supporters are invited to attend throughout the weekend to support the pair or have a go at playing bowls on the club’s spare rinks, with a suggested donation to the fundraising pot.

Kathy said, “We’re thrilled to be taking on this challenge for such an important local charity. We’d love to see the community come out and support us whether that’s cheering us on, buying a raffle ticket or picking up a bowl and giving it a try.”

  • Frome through to Regional play-offs

Frome Netball Report:
Frome Stars vs Lawn
County Playoffs - 26th April

Frome are through to the Regional play-offs after defeating Lawn, league winners of the other Wiltshire league.

Held in Swindon, we arrived early, settling ourselves courtside and got straight down to business. Our starting seven came out all guns blazing, gave their all and were taking no prisoners.

Outstanding shooting from GA Liv and GS Nat and, with so much pressure, they came out and delivered. Incredible mid court, from WA Laura, supported in the last quarter by Ella and C Han, delivering balls into the shooting circle with patience and speed, not to mention incredible defence back down the court. And finally WD Gi, GD Freya and GK Lucy working like an unstoppable unit to delay, confuse and regain possession.

With a final score of 45 – 27 Frome will go on to their next and final challenge in a bid to become a Regional 3 team.

  • Powerful climate crisis film screening

Frome is one of thousands of communities to screen a new film titled The People’s Emergency Briefing.

The screening, taking place at the Cheese and Grain on Thursday 21st May at 7pm, forms part of a growing UK-wide programme of events designed to help ensure that the public and decision-makers are clearly and honestly informed about the climate and nature crisis and what it may mean for communities across the country.

In November 2025, more than 1,200 MPs, peers and leaders from business, culture, faith, sport and the media gathered at Westminster Central Hall for the National Emergency Briefing - a landmark event bringing together leading experts to assess the UK’s exposure to climate and nature risks.

A special night of live music is coming to Frome, bringing together two bands featuring local mothers and daughters.

The event on 16th May at The Tunnels will see The Electric Kool-Aid Collective and What The Fuzz perform. Both bands feature mothers and daughters playing together, adding an extra dimension to the evening through a shared love of music across generations.

With their debut single released on 2nd May, this is a chance to catch a band very much on the rise.

  • Fair Frome experiences higher demand from residents in need

A charity in Frome helping residents in poverty says it is experiencing higher demand, with an increase in rough sleepers and families struggling to access food vouchers.

Senior coordinator of Fair Frome Lenka Grimes, which runs the town’s food bank and Community Pantry among other projects, raised concerns at the Full Council meeting on 22nd April.

She said, “I am led to believe that Somerset has the third highest number of rough sleepers in the country at the moment. It is having a particular impact on us. It is daily. We are having people coming in for showers, hanging out, people with severe mental health issues. It is a real issue.”

Lenka also raised concerns for many families in Frome who have struggled to access free school meal holiday vouchers over the Easter holidays. She said a recent change in the system means families whose children receive free school meals now have to apply for the vouchers rather than receiving them automatically.

  • Council commissions review of management structure

Frome Town Council has commissioned an external review of its staffing and leadership model to ensure it is fit for purpose as the organisation grows.

At the Full Council meeting on Wednesday 22nd April, the majority of councillors agreed for Council HR and Government Support (CHRGS) to carry out the review at a cost of £4,300.

The assessment will examine management capacity, reporting lines and whether current arrangements are sustainable. The council says it has seven line managers, which is ‘unusual’ for an organisation of its size.

Leader of the council, Cllr Fiona Barrows said, “We are a council that is in transition: we’re not the same council we were five or 10 years ago. Getting our management structure right is so important – we’ve grown organically over recent years; A lot of our managers have stayed in post quite a long time, which is fantastic and there comes a point where you have to take a pause and ask ‘is this working as well as it could?’ I believe we’ll get a lot of value for our money in terms of efficiency savings and effectiveness savings.”

  • Countdown’s Susie Dent to appear at Memorial Theatre

Countdown star Susie Dent will bring her new live show to Frome this month, offering audiences a fascinating look at the quirks and curiosities of the English language.

‘Britain’s best-loved wordsmith’ will appear at the Memorial Theatre on Saturday 16th May at 2pm with her latest tour, ‘Word Perfect’.

Following on from her hit show ‘The Secret Life of Words’, Susie is back with a brand-new collection of facts and stories from the wonderful world of words.

Have you ever wondered whether there’s a word for going to the fridge for the umpteenth time in search of something new? Or puzzled over the reason why a group of crows is called a ‘murder’, while owls form a ‘parliament’? Is teen slang actually designed to make us tear our hair out? And just how many words do we need for being drunk?
