REMEMBRANCE fortnight begins this weekend and local Poppy Appeal organiser, Maggy Daniell, is asking for help from local people.
Maggy said, “As always, we would be delighted if new people joined us, as collectors, or to help behind the scenes. Help can be for just one hour or for several – it is all useful.
“Many of our older and very valued collectors joined ages ago, when it was normal to keep at it year on year; and would appreciate some lightening of the load now. We always appreciate it when younger people (16-66!) are willing to bring some new energy and ideas, even if for just the one Appeal – this year or next.
“It is a short commitment, as the Poppy Appeal is a one-off yearly event. So if anyone has a free hour or so, please do get in touch, on 07854 818286.”
Frome will come together in the act of remembrance and join the nation to remember the fallen and injured of all conflicts, and all affected by war on Sunday, 12th November at 10.58 hours.
“It is the honour of the Royal British Legion to act as custodians of Remembrance,” said Jane Norris, chair of the Frome Branch RBL. “This year is no different. Anniversaries are in the minds of many, be they personal or of dates that bring significance for an organisation. 2017 marks, amongst other notable dates, the centenary of the Battle of Passchendaele, and the centenary of the formation of the Royal Air Force.
“The injuries of conflict stretch beyond that visible to friends or family, so it is significant that Remembrance Sunday continues to give the nation that moment to stop, reflect and consider our needs, and those of others.
“The announcement that HM The Queen will not be laying a wreath at the Cenotaph, emphasises that nothing stays still. Instead, HRH Prince Charles will be representing HM The Queen, on behalf of the nation. Many others will be laying wreaths around the county after observing the two minute silence at the eleventh hour.
“Frome will be holding its own Remembrance Parade and Service, where everyone is welcome.
“If you should wish to take part in the parade, please meet at the Drill Hall, Keyford, at 10.15am on Sunday 12th November. March off at 10.45am. Otherwise, come along to the area around the Frome Memorial Theatre, where the service will begin at 1055am.
“Besides the official wreath laying, there will be an opportunity for the public to lay a poppy or cross during the service
“Please note, roads will be closed from 10.30m until 11.30am so make allowances for parking.
“Seating and toilets are available at the theatre.
“The Assembly Rooms will be open for refreshments and chat after the service.
“On Sunday 12th November at 1830hrs, the Service of Remembrance with Parade of Standards will take place at St John the Baptist Church, Frome. Readings by David Warburton M.P
“On Saturday 11th November, 1100hrs at Frome War Memorial, two- minute silence will be observed. RBL, RNA, RAFA and other service organisation Standards dipped.”
