A unique gift shop nestled at the top of Catherine Street, which began as a pop-up during the pandemic, has been named the Best Gift Shop in Somerset.
Hung Drawn Quoted, near Badcox, which sells humorous cards and gifts with a satirical political edge, received the award from the England Business Awards.
“This is the first time I have ever run a gift shop, so it’s especially lovely to have won an award for it,” said the owner, Kate Talbot.
Kate and her husband Neil purchased the premises which was derelict at an auction in 2021. She said that from there, they built the shop and business from scratch. “It’s been a labour of love to restore the building to its former glory,” says Kate.
The shop, which originally began as a pop-up during lockdown, has steadily grown its customer base. With a focus on social and political themes, its products appeal to a broad audience. “A lot of my regulars are middle-aged men who are delighted to have a funny card to send to their mates about something in the news,” said Kate.
“We also do regular cards for all occasions. I design all the cards and gifts myself, and most of them are made on the premises.”
The shop also has a gallery and vintage tearoom, offering a trip down memory lane with the ‘best cuppa in town.’
However, Kate notes that being located at the top of Catherine Street near Badcox can be a challenge. “It can be a struggle to get passing trade, as most shoppers don’t imagine there is much beyond the top of Catherine Hill,” explained Kate.
“Several customers have told me they hadn’t been to this end of town in years. It was quite run-down before, and our shop was derelict when we bought it at auction. But since we renovated, other businesses have opened nearby. It’s definitely worth going the extra 100 yards up the street to find us.”
The England Business Awards run regionally across England’s towns and cities. Like a star rating, businesses are awarded a ‘badge’, which they display at their premises.
