FROME came together to deck the town with sparking lanterns, Christmas cheer and festive fun at this year’s Christmas Lights Switch on event, held on the last Friday in November.
Over 800 lanterns were made at workshops run by artists Mel Day and Aliss Vaas from Light the Night who supported local families, schools and artists in the lead up to the big event. The sparkling spectacle saw the most fantastical gingerbread town-themed creations take to the town centre stage as part of the lantern procession, led by the joyous Samba Band.
The evening started with a traditional performance from much -loved Frome Town Band, followed by a nearly 70-strong Rock Choir singing their hearts out. There was street entertainment from an eye-catching stilt walker and a dazzling performance from a fire spinner, while children enjoyed a whirl on a toy carousel and a visit to Santa’s Grotto thanks to local charity, We Hear You, and support from Frome Town Council.
The Mayor of Frome’s own band, Back of the Bus, also performed on the evening with sound support HL Audio. Frome’s mayor, cllr Sara Butler said, “It was wonderful to see so many people filling the streets and what a treat it was to perform for the town as part of this special event. A very heart-felt thank you to everyone involved in creating such a fantastic atmosphere, it was certainly a night I won’t forget, and I hope the community feel the same!”
Special stalls from The Crumpeteers, Penleigh, Rye Bakery and Flow on the Go, lined Cork Street and many local eateries stayed open on the night to keep residents warm, fed and ready for the countdown.
In addition to getting the town’s festive season started, the event was also raising funds for two of Frome’s local causes Fair Frome and the Christmas Get-Together, which provides a welcoming space and meal on Christmas day to residents across the town.
Tanya, a spectator who watched the parade said, “Frome is amazing when everyone comes together for things like this.”
Another spectator, Steve said, “Thanks again for a lovely evening, always special.”
