FROGS (Frome Recreation and Open Ground Supporters) joined the Bristol Avon Rivers Trust last month to highlight the danger to rivers from pollution entering the system via surface water drains.
Representing FROGS, Liz Hutchinson said, “It is all too easy to tip liquids like paint, oil, detergents etc, down the storm drains in our streets, without realising that these lead straight into the river. Such contaminants affect the water quality and consequently the fish and other wildlife can be harmed.
“Non-toxic, biodegradable chalk was used to mark a yellow fish symbol beside the surface water drains in the town centre, and posters explaining the problem were put up.
“Several people stopped to talk to us about the project. The fish symbols were quite eye-catching and should act as a reminder to dispose of rubbish – whether solid or liquid – in the proper way. The fish symbols will quickly disappear after rain.”
