Frome take their revenge against Devizes with ‘unforgettable’ win

Sat. 15th Feb. Southern Counties South Frome RFC 31 Devizes RFC 5

Frome RFC welcomed Wiltshire rivals Devizes RFC to a wet and windy Gypsy Lane on Saturday 15th February looking to avenge the narrow defeat earlier in the season.

Playing up the hill and in the face of the strong wind Frome started well keeping the ball tight with forwards and carrying strongly.

Frome had the visitors on the back foot early and thought they had scored out wide when fullback Rob Sully touched down, but were called back for a forward pass.

However, they were brought back for a penalty under the posts and opted for the scrum. With the front row of Geoff Taylor, Ryan Lech and Elliott Bowler putting pressure on the opposition, a pushover try looked inevitable. But Devizes were adjudged to have transgressed under pressure and Frome were awarded a penalty try.

Frome continued to dominate and scored a second try when from a set play from a line out on the opposition 22, second row James Howard broke down the touch line and found captain John Benstead in support to score in the corner, giving Frome a 12-nil half time lead.

Playing with the wind and slope in the second half, Frome continued to control the game in the second half.

They continued to pressure the visitors with solid defence marshalled by centre Dominic Jones. The pressure finally paid off when after a number of phases with forwards and backs carrying hard centre Dav Jones (now playing Flanker) touched down at the base of the post from short range, the try being converted by Howard.

The Frome effort continued with the replacements bringing fresh legs to the attack. Frome secured the bonus point when after a line out Frome created a ruck close to the line and Lech burrowed over from close range.

The Frome pack continued to dominate and from a scrum, 10 metres out and despite having a man in the sin bin, man of the match Ross Toten broke from the back of the scrum and with a deft touch released winger Craig Thompson to score in the corner.

Despite a late try by Devizes this was a great team effort by all of the team to secure a fine win in difficult conditions. A huge thanks must go to the supporters who braved the wind and rain to cheer on the side.

Head coach Toby Culff said, “Irrespective of the injuries which affected us that day, we were bitterly disappointed with our close loss at Devizes earlier in the season. It was a result which badly dented our promotion aspirations and the nature of the loss, on a blustery, wet and niggly day, was especially disappointing. It was the type of match which we back ourselves to win. As it turned out, that fixture in Devizes, as well as our last match in a Corsham gale a couple of weeks ago, proved an instructive dress rehearsal.

“Storm Dennis ensured that this encounter was a tight and attritional one. To be honest, that suited us down to the ground. The players were motivated to avenge the aforementioned defeat and they’d prepared well all week. However anxious the weather made me, it had no adverse effect on the players whatsoever. In fact, it only acted to strengthen their resolve and heighten their concentration. From the first minute, they were absolutely magnificent. They played with remarkable precision, considering the conditions, allied with huge composure and unstoppable physicality. It might not have been pretty, as such, but it was completely beautiful to their coach’s eyes and I think the performance ranks among the very best I’ve ever witnessed at The Lane. It’s one I’ll not forget and I can’t give the players enough credit. The encouragement of the many sponsors and supporters in attendance was much appreciated, and the players were wholly deserving of their warm congratulations after the final whistle. Well done to everyone!”

There is a break in league fixtures for the 1st XV who are back in action on the 29th February when they travel to 5th place Yeovil RFC.

The Man of the Match award, sponsored by The Old Bath Arms, Frome, went to Ross Toten and Dominic Jones.

  • Town invited to create new sunflower bed

Residents are invited to bring their home-grown sunflower plants to a new community flower bed in the Mary Baily Playing Field.

The new bed was created by the town council’s ranger team, with Ranger Mark and volunteer ranger Malcolm preparing the space.

The idea was inspired by the documentary ‘Power Station’, screened at the Merlin Theatre in March. In the film, a community comes together not only to generate renewable solar energy, but also to plant thousands of sunflowers: transforming their street into a powerful, collective symbol of hope, creativity and shared action.

  • ‘Terrific success’ for Frome’s first veterans’ breakfast

Frome’s first Veterans’ Breakfast has been hailed a success after more than 30 people attended the inaugural event aimed at bringing together former service personnel.

The gathering at The Cross Keys pub in Blatchbridge on 4th April was welcomed by a five-piece bagpipe and drum band.

Member Laurie Magee said, “It was a terrific success. The pub was filled with service vets from all three services who not only enjoyed a five-piece bagpipe and drum band to welcome them to the breakfast but a hearty meal and great banter.”

The Armed Forces and Veterans Breakfast Club is a national organisation providing a supportive and welcoming environment for veterans.

Organiser Alex Anderson launched the Frome group following the success of a similar initiative in Warminster.

The Frome group meets on the first Saturday of each month at The Cross Keys at 10.30am, with breakfast served from 11am.

  • Children celebrate cultural diversity with handcrafted flags

Young people in Frome have celebrated diversity and inclusion through a handcrafted flag project now on display in the library.

The initiative brought together pupils from local schools and community groups, with each contributing handmade flags reflecting their heritage, identity and personal stories. Using a range of reclaimed materials, colours and symbols, the children created bunting representing countries, cultures and shared values from around the world.

The flag-making took place across three workshops, the first at the Multicultural Festival in October last year and two further sessions at Frome Library, where the display is now in the children’s section.

One of the project coordinators, Angelique Mulholland, said, “This bunting is more than decoration, it’s a powerful visual representation of how our differences can come together to create something beautiful.”

  • Town-wide programme brings month of social activities in May

A month-long programme of activities and events is set to take place across the town in May as part of an initiative encouraging residents to connect with themselves, each other and local places.

The scheme, Frome Connects, will run throughout the month and includes a mix of social activities, creative events and informal meet-ups in community spaces.

Highlights include the return of Dress Up Fridays, which began during lockdown and invites people to wear formal clothing or fancy dress and turn the town into their catwalk each Friday.

Set-piece moments include a Kate Bush-themed flashmob (Running Up That [Catherine] Hill) on 30th May, followed by a bell peal at St John’s Church where the bells will play Running Up That Hill.

There will also be a whole-town drone photo on Friday 30th May, with everyone encouraged to ‘look up’ at around 12.30pm.

  • Community garden blossoms after funding boost

A new growing season has officially begun at Broadway Community Garden in Frome following a £20,000 National Lottery grant.

Local residents, volunteers and families gathered on Sunday 29th March to mark the start of spring and celebrate the new major funding award.

The grant will support the next phase of the garden’s development, helping it expand its role as a shared green space for the town.

The gathering saw volunteers come together to prepare beds, plant early crops and welcome new faces.

Alongside this, the garden is launching a new membership offer, giving more people in Frome a way to support the project even if they’re not able to volunteer regularly. Members will help sustain the garden’s growth and upkeep, ensuring it remains a shared space for the whole community.

  • Share your views on the Key Centre

An initiative inviting people to share their views on the Key Centre is set to run over a fortnight.

The ‘listening fortnight’ will take place at the Key Centre from 27th April to 8th May, gathering feedback on the facility and ideas for what else people would like to see in the space.

People can take part by filling out an online form via My Frome, completing a paper form at the Key Centre or speaking to staff during drop-in sessions.

On Saturday 2nd May, a drop-in session at Tower View play area will run (time to be confirmed), where people can complete a short survey or speak to the team. Frome Town Council’s Engagement Officer Liz will also be based at The Mount and in the Key Centre on most days throughout the fortnight.

Frome Town Council took over the Key Centre, a former Sure Start centre on The Mount, in 2025 as part of devolution from Somerset Council. The building has been refreshed, rebranded and is now regularly used by local community groups and organisations, including an armed forces outreach group, a family law clinic and Purple Elephant’s youth club.

  • Maxïmo Park to play Cheese and Grain

Indie rock icons Maxïmo Park are bringing their 20th anniversary show to the Cheese and Grain.

The band will perform at the venue on Tuesday 16th June, celebrating 20 years since the release of their Mercury Prize-nominated album A Certain Trigger.

The show is part of a series of special one-off shows, where the band “gives a fresh perspective” to the album, which includes iconic songs Apply Some Pressure, Graffiti and Going Missing.

Lead singer Paul Smith said, “Not many bands make it to a 20th year together so we’re having a big celebration, with a special 20th anniversary tour and by giving a fresh perspective to A Certain Trigger.

“Our first album remains dear to so many people and compiling archive material for the reissue has been like entering a time machine - thrilling but also a bit scary. Happily, we think the music has more than stood the test of time and the tour, where we’ll revisit many of the beloved older songs, will be a joyful experience for both us and our audience.

Some residents have already shared suggestions, ranging from more planting and litter-picking to a new riverside amphitheatre and a shipping container food court.

Events and activities for the Market Yard and surrounding cultural venues can also be proposed.
