A Democracy Day in advance of the national and local elections in May next year was approved by Frome Town Council at a meeting on 5th November.
The inititative was proposed by cllr Peter Macfadyen, Independent Mayor of Frome who said, “In keeping with this council’s aim of expanding participation and engagement, it is proposed that a Democracy Day is held on the afternoon of Sunday 12th April 2015. This will be held at the Cheese & Grain, 4.00pm – 8.00pm.
“The intention is to capture popular interest and cover the full range of options open to electors. It is not proposed that this day will substitute for, but rather complement, other campaigning planned by candidates in the run up to the elections.”
It was agreed that all Prospective Parliamentary Candidates and all candidates for Frome wards in the town and district elections will be invited to attend. The town clerk has been charged with organising the event to ensure political neutrality.
The town council says, “Please make a note of the event in your diaries today and there will be more information to follow.”
