A NEW initiative which promotes minimising food waste will launch next month in Frome.
Community Fridge: Frome is thought to be the UK’s first community fridge. It will enable people to share excess food in order to try and minimise wastage in Frome and raise awareness of food waste issues.
Esther Deeks said, “Food is wasted and there is a need for food. Most of the food waste in the UK (4.1 million tonnes or 61%) is avoidable and could have been eaten had it been better managed. What would happen if we replaced our bins and shared our surplus food in a communal fridge space?
“Donate to the fridge whether it’s post dinner party, ‘your eyes were bigger than your belly’, or you are going away for the weekend.
“Anyone can take food from the fridge, this isn’t charity. It’s about utilising the redundant source of food in Frome and fighting against waste. Recovering the time and energy that went into producing that food, and enjoying it! And a bonus is it’s free and accessible to everyone.”
Come to The Community Fridge: Frome’s launch on the 2nd April at 12.00noon, at Loop de Loop, Cheese & Grain car park. Bring your abundance of food or collect some for yourself. From the 2nd April, the fridge will be open every day 8.00am – 8.00pm, located at Loop de Loop cubicle 3.
