TWO teams of young players from Frome Town United’s youth squad are fundraising to attend a mini-European football tournament at Frome’s twin town, Murrhardt, in Germany this July.
The 18 youngsters will join teams from Frome’s other twin towns, Château-Gontier-sur-Mayenne in France and Rabka-Zdrój & Rötha in Poland, for the tournament, which is timed to coincide with Euro 2024. The teams from the four twin towns will also have the opportunity to travel to Stuttgart Stadium and visit the fan zones and Euro Cup event areas within the Stuttgart city centre.
Frome Town FC chairman Lee Seviour said, “Frome Town United U15 boys and U14 girls have been offered an amazing opportunity to take part in a Mini European Tournament in Murrhardt, Germany between 4th and 8th July 2024. Frome Town United have been in talks with mayor of Frome cllr Philip Campagna, over the past few months and Philip has been a real influence in ensuring Frome Town United players have been given this opportunity.
“This is an amazing opportunity for the players to travel to Germany and play a 7-a-side tournament against players from Germany, France and Poland. The players travelling have all played for Frome Town United since they were very little. They are now keen to represent their club and country and to make Frome proud.
“Murrhardt will be covering the costs of all accommodation and meals for the teams while we’re away; however, we will need to fund our own travel to and from the tournament. If we are unable to raise enough money to cover these costs, we will simply be unable to attend. We’re doing lots of our own fundraising, including a bingo night on Saturday 25th May, at the clubhouse (visit the Frome Town FC website for details) and our youngsters will be looking into lots of other ways to raise the £8,000 we need.
“We also have a fundraising page online and any donations made will be extremely well appreciated by all at Frome Town United and especially the players who have this brilliant opportunity. Thank you.”
Frome mayor Philip Campagna said, “I am very pleased that Frome Town United have agreed to send two teams to the football tournament in Murrhardt. This is an excellent opportunity to forge a new partnership between Frome and our three twin towns. The players will gain so much from the trip and hopefully establish new links and friendships. I know that they are working hard to raise the necessary funds for the trip, and I am supporting them in any way that I can. It is hoped that Frome Town United may be able to host the tournament in 2025.”
