A FROME woman recently escaped the English autumn and set off on an 840 mile cycle through Vietnam and Cambodia to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.
Wendy Jones has joined 57 other cyclists to make the trip in 8 days – an average of 105 miles per day. They started in Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam, and plan to finish at Angkor Wat in Cambodia. She has already raised over £3,950 of her £4,000 target.
Although Vietnam and Cambodia are nearing the end of their rainy seasons, the region remains very humid and temperatures can reach daily highs of over 30 degrees.
Wendy, who raised over £3,200 riding from London to Paris last year, spent the run-up to the challenge cycling from Frome to work in Bath.
Before the cycle Wendy said, “I know it will be an amazing trip, but there is no forgetting that it is a challenge. It will be early mornings, late evenings, cycling miles in the heat, dust, monsoons, and over rough terrain, but it’ll all be worth it to raise as much as possible for Macmillan.
“I’d like to thank everyone who has helped my fundraising with sponsorship, buying the odd bag of sweets (or two), running a chocolate and cupcake course, a cycling and open garden day with Fleur Rush, and for the encouraging words that will help me when I run out of energy and jelly beans just don’t work!
“I had such an amazing experience on the London to Paris trip and met so many lovely people all raising money for Macmillan, all with similar stories and reasons to take on these challenges. Mine is in memory of my aunt, Carol Wase.
“Macmillan provided outstanding care to both my aunt and family – meaning she could stay at home throughout her illness. This is my way of saying thank you to all that provided such loving care.”
