FROME Rotary Club has announced the winners of Frome’s Young Photographer of the Year 2017, with first prize going to Sol Warsop, a student at Frome College.
The local competition was held on the 27th November at Rook Lane Chapel. This year the competition was open to two younger age groups as well as the usual 14 to 17 years. Entries were received from children at Frome College, Critchill, North Hill, Selwood Academy, Trinity First and Vallis First Schools.
There were 42 entries and each student submitted three photographs on the given theme of ‘A Different Perspective.’ The entrants were free to interpret the theme in any way they wished and each provided a short note on what inspired their photographs.
The team of judges were headed by Ben Brain, the editor of the country’s best-selling photographic magazine ‘Digital Camera’ and included James Bartholomew, a professional photographer who has a studio in Willow Vale and Jo Windel, an experienced photographer who has been photographing for the Frome Musical Theatre Company for many years.
Ben Brain commented on the very high standard of the photography and the difficulty the judges had choosing the winners.
Those winners were Sol Warsop from Frome College, Charlie Matthews of North Hill House and Wilf Wright of Trinity First. The three winners were each presented with a glass clock trophy and will progress to the regional finals which take place on the 3rd February. The judges also awarded Highly Commended to Beth McIntosh (College); Corrie Hanley (Critchill); Elen Northeast (Selwood); and Raya Somerville (Vallis).
Each competitor received a certificate and a small box of chocolates from Chris Page, the President of Frome Rotary. The Highly Commended received a copy of Digital Camera and lightroom software from Ben Brain.
Thanks were expressed to Bill Button, the CEO of NVB Architects, for the use of the excellent venue and for sponsoring the prizes. The principal of the college, Emma Reynolds, gave encouragement and thanks to Rotary and all involved in organising a most interesting and worthwhile competition.
