ELEVEN-year-old Bea Baylis has been busy cleaning the streets of Frome over the past month to raise money for climate change charity The Climate Coalition.
Bea has collected 19 bags of rubbish from the Trinity area in Frome and has so far raised £85; she hopes to hit her goal of £100 soon. Bea’s mother Vicky says that Bea was inspired to take on the task after being dismayed at the amount of rubbish that appears on her walk to school.
Vicky said, “Bea had previously joined her dad, who is part of the Trinity community group, on some litter picks when she was younger. As she’s got older she’s been getting increasingly frustrated with the amount of rubbish that she spots on the way to school so she decided to do something about it!
“We are so proud of her as she’s done this completely off her own back and she should be an example for us all really as she’s willing to do that little bit extra to help make her community a better place to live.”
Bea said, “I felt like the community litter pick wasn’t enough so I started going out weekly on my own but this quickly turned into a daily thing. No matter how much I pick up I still find loads more the next day which can be very frustrating! I’ve mostly seen lots of cigarettes on the floor as well as crisp packets and cans which is a shame.
“I wanted to raise money for The Climate Coalition as climate change is the biggest threat we face and this charity is doing a lot to help the climate crisis.”
Bea and Vicky are also appealing for people in the Trinity area who may have space in their bin for some of Bea’s collection. Vicky said, “We are running out of space in our bins, so if you live near us in the Trinity area and have some space in your bin that we could put some bags in, it would be really appreciated!
“Equally if you want to help but are unable to donate then it would be great if people considered doing their own litter pick in their own corner of the town. If everyone looked after their own smaller community patches, then the whole town would benefit.”
Bea says she will continue to collect litter for as long as she can. If you would like to support Bea’s efforts search ‘Bea’s Bin Bags’ on GoFundMe or visit: www.gofundme.com /f/beas-bin-bags
