PREPARATIONS are under way for this year’s big Christmas Lights switch on in Frome and other events leading up to Christmas.
The ‘Christmas Lights Switch On’ will be held on Friday 1st December from 4.30pm in the Market Place.
Alongside the big light reveal will be Christmas stalls, food, mulled wine, Christmas crafts and lots of children’s entertainment including Rocktopus, choirs, Frome Band and a marching samba band.
The main focus of the lights switch-on will be a fantastic lantern procession, which will march into town following several routes, all joining together in the centre around the tree.
The Christmas Extravaganza Market, held at the Cheese and Grain, is also part of the festivities on Friday 1st December featuring the chance to pick up top quality crafts, gifts and produce. Live entertainment and festive food will also be available from 5:00pm- 9:00pm with free admission.
Also, come and join in the Christmas festivities and bring your children along to the Children’s Festival Christmas Party on Sunday 17th December starting at 10:00am and finishing at 2:00pm.
The Cheese and Grain are also hosting ‘Upon a Winter’s Night’ on Thursday 21st December where Cara Dillon will provide a magical and memorable festive experience performing classic Carols, Celtic Hymns and other Christmas Song. The event starts at 8:00pm and tickets cost £22 and can be purchased from www.cheeseandgrain.ticket solve.com/shows/873572739.
Free lantern-making workshops
Frome Town Council is hoping for as many people as possible to join in the lantern procession and is offering free lantern-making workshops.
Artists Aliss Vaas and Mel Day are behind the plan to create a beautiful collection of LED-lit tissue paper and willow lanterns. They will be drawing on their experience working on similar projects, in Frome and beyond, often as part of the local community group, Home in Frome, who have given their enthusiastic support to the ‘Light the Night’ project.
The new workshops will provide a chance for people to have fun with family and friends, new and old. People who might not have tried such activities before will be especially welcome. At each session, people will be learning how to make three-dimensional forms in withy, tissue and glue, and working together to explore ideas and create spectacular lanterns.
The workshops will take place in the friendly atmosphere of the Welshmill Community Hub, led by Mel and Aliss and with a group of volunteers from Home in Frome on hand to give encouragement and support. Further workshops will be taking place in schools.
The workshop dates are: Sunday 12th November 10.00am-4.00pm, Wednesday 15th November 4.00pm-8.00pm, Saturday 18th November 10.00am-4.00pm, Tuesday 21st November 6.00pm-8.00pm, Sunday 26 November 10.00am-4.00pm, Tuesday 28th November 6.00pm-8.00pm and Wednesday 29th November 6.00pm-8.00pm.
