Films inspired by the climate are set to engage audiences this month as Frome’s International Climate Film Festival returns.
The festival will take place over two dates – 18th and 25th May – showcasing submissions from over 100 countries. The films share powerful stories about climate change and the resourceful solutions being developed by the people most affected.
Organiser Julia Wellard said, “The inspiring stories are told through animation, video, film and music – many of them short, but none lacking in impact. You will find passion, thoughtfulness, humour and resilience, but above all a powerful wish to take positive action.
“Some of the films people can expect to see include a teenager from Kenya starting a Go Green society; in Bangladesh, teachers welcoming children aboard a school boat; and Dreamscapes, narrated by Kate Winslet – a celebration of the beauty of our planet.”
On 18th May, the festival will run from 9.30am to 3pm at the Cheese and Grain. The first hour of films in the main hall will be for children, alongside art activities and a river walk. A full programme of films will then be screened in the main hall and two upstairs rooms until 1pm.
After lunch, from 2pm to 3pm, there will be a discussion panel opened by MP Anna Sabine. “An exciting line-up of panellists includes Diana Finch (Value Beyond Money) and Tahir Latif from the Greener Jobs Alliance,” says Julia.
The awards ceremony and screenings of the winning films will take place the following Sunday, 25th May, at Rook Lane Chapel, accompanied by live music and a climate exhibition.
“After the awards, we’ll be screening the UK premiere of Dreamscapes, narrated by Kate Winslet as Mother Earth. The film is described as a symphony of visuals and music, weaving together the talents of 250 filmmakers,” explained Julia.
