ONCE again, the people of Frome have given generously to the Poppy Appeal, with over £21,800 raised in Frome and Nunney.
Poppy Appeal organiser Jane Wood, who is stepping down after seven years in the role, says she is delighted with the total. It brings the amount that has been raised under her leadership to £133,470.
Jane said, “The Poppy Appeal this year raised yet another amazing amount with Frome raising £20,597.05, and Nunney raising £1,292.28. These totals include gift aid tax returns of nearly £500 jointly, for which I especially thank all those people who took the time to fill in the form.
“This year’s total brings the amount given during my seven years as organiser to exactly £133,470, which is an incredible sum and which I know is being used responsibly in the many areas where the Legion has professionally trained experts.
“I thank each and every person who has helped me over the years and especially everyone who has bought a poppy each year.”
The Royal British Legion provides welfare to the whole Armed Forces family – serving, ex-Service and their dependants. They also campaign on a range of issues affecting Service people, are the custodian of Remembrance, run the annual Poppy Appeal and are one of the UK’s largest membership organisations. The Legion spends more than £1.9million per week assisting the service community which includes the ageing World War II generation’s need for help, which is now at its peak.
By 2020, the research estimates that 1.8million people in the Armed Forces community will be living with long-standing illness; 800,000 will be isolated socially, having little contact with family or friends; and 700,000 will be living below the poverty line.
