SELWOOD Academy recently played host to an audience of senior citizens in an afternoon of wartime songs, drama and refreshments.
Year 8 pupils had visited Gracewell House to meet residents and listen to their stories of wartime Frome. In ‘Wartime Memories’, some of these recollections were recreated through improvisation for the audience, such as the crash of a German bomber over Murdercombe.
Jane Larman, on behalf of Selwood Academy said, “Many of our guests brought along personal memorabilia from the war which sparked very interesting conversations.
“One couple had brought along a letter from a relative who was an RAF pilot during the Battle of Britain in 1940. One gentleman remarked that the sound of the air-raid siren still gave him goosebumps; such was the evocative nature of the afternoon.
“The afternoon was rounded off with a stirring encore of Vera Lynn’s ‘We’ll Meet Again’.
“We would like to thank all our guests who made this such a memorable afternoon. Merry Christmas and a Happy new Year.”
