SEVEN local people pulled a 12-tonne fire engine around Frome last month and have so far raised nearly £2,000 for local counselling charity We Hear You (WHY).
Local police sergeant Rachel Clark and six of her family and friends pulled the engine five kilometres around town in an hour as part of an annual fundraising tradition that last year saw them pull a coach.
The charity challenges are in memory of Rachel’s mum, Shirley Wiggins, who died of cancer in 2011. This year’s effort was pulled off by Rachel, Daniel and Matthew Clark, Matthew Pfeiffer, Karen Crudgington, Shaun Lewis, and Ian Moyes.
Rachel said, “This year’s fundraiser was really challenging, and made even more so with the heat! Our training clearly paid off as we completed our 5km route in an hour flat.
“We’ve raised nearly £2,000 of our £2,500 target, and have been overwhelmed by people’s support in the run-up and on the day.
“The fire service were excellent in their support by sounding the sirens all the way and encouraging people to donate! We’d like to say a big thank you to the community of Frome, WHY, and all of our friends and families.
“We’re already looking forward to another event next year!”
