THE family of Julian Wort, who died in March 2000, are continuing with their fundraising efforts to bring cardiac screening for young people to Frome.
Julian died suddenly of a undiagnosed heart condition at the age of 28. In his memory, Julian’s parents, Shirley and Dave Wort, set up the ‘Julian Wort Memorial Fund’ through the charity Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) in 2001.
Shirley told Frome Times, “Since we started our fundraising in 2001, as a family, and with the support of many friends, clubs and donations, we have raised the wonderful amount of £43,883.
“With this money we have donated through CRY, two ECG machines, two defibrillators to Frome Hospital and the medical practice, and funded four screening days where 369 young people were screened for hidden heart problems. And we hope that we have raised awareness of these heart conditions.”
To coincide with the 20th anniversary of Julian’s death, the Wort family have booked another cardiac screening day for young people aged between 14 and 35. The event will take place on 21st March 2020.
“The cost of a screening day to test 100 young people aged between 14 – 35 is £5,000. So we are still actively fund-raising,” said Shirley.

Fundraising for CRY and the ‘Julian Wort Memorial Fund’ also continues in the community. Local woman, Sally Lacey, has organised a Buddy Holly tribute and rock ‘n’ roll evening to be held at Frome Town Football Club this Saturday, 25th May. All proceeds from the raffle are going to CRY and the Julian Wort Memorial Fund.
