THE best darts player in the world came to Frome last week to take on local players in a special event at Frome Football Club.
World number one, Michael van Gerwen, and number 20, Vincent van der Voort, visited the football club for an evening of darts and meet-and-greets with local fans last Wednesday.
Organiser Paul Starr said, “The evening was a major success! We had over 300 people come along and they really enjoyed it.
“The event sold out a couple of months in advance because Michael is the best in the world by a long way. The players had a good time and it was a relaxed, fun evening. Michael was great with the crowd, too – he’s got a brilliant stage presence.
“The guys played against local and county players, event sponsors, and people who had booked a lot of tickets. The youngest challenger was six year-old Owen Hooke who was over the moon to play his hero, Michael. The pros even lost a couple of games!
“Of course they went a bit easy and would do something like finish on two double fours then a double 12 to make the games a bit more fun.
“Unfortunately we didn’t have time for them to play one another; people were queueing out the door for photos.
“Thanks to our sponsors Red Devil Surfacing, Kevin Corcoran Carpets and Vinyls, CW Accountancy Services and Stellasoft for making the event possible.”
Paul’s next event will be on Friday 24th March at the Coleford Royal British Legion. Former professional Wayne Mardle will play alongside Bristol’s Steve Brown and local player Mike Gregory. For more information call Paul on 07917 442054.
