Israel’s foremost and most forthright historian will be coming to talk in Frome on Tuesday 30th September, as the guest of Frome Friends of Palestine.
The organisers say, “Ilan Pappé knows more about the background to the Israeli occupation of Palestine than almost anyone. He is a scholar whose has dared to challenge his country’s comforting foundation-myths with books such as ‘The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine.’ Hounded from his job at the University of Haifa, he now heads the European Centre for Palestine Studies at the University of Exeter.
“Professor Pappe pulls no punches. He describes Israeli policy towards Gaza as “incremental genocide.” The strategy was “to ghettoize Gaza and somehow hope that the people there — 1.8 million as of today — would be dropped into eternal oblivion. But the Ghetto proved to be rebellious and unwilling to live under conditions of strangulation, isolation, starvation and economic collapse. So resending it to oblivion necessitates the continuation of genocidal policies.”
“This is one talk not to miss. A powerful and convincing speaker, Ilan’s Israeli origins mean that his opinion will carry weight with the doubters (if there are any left), so bring all your friends and relations. Tickets are available from Frome Wholefoods and from the Cheese and Grain itself, price £5/£3 concessions. You can order online here: www.cheeseandgrain.com/events/events/30-sep-14-genocide-in-gaza-origins-and-implications-cheese–grain/
“Ilan will be signing copies of his latest book ‘The Idea of Israel’ and there will be copies of his other books on sale too, as well as Palestinian produce and more.”
The event will take place at the Cheese and Grain, Market Yard, Frome BA11 1BE on Tuesday 30th September, at 8.00pm.
