Getting out and about in Great Big Green Week

FROME’S Great Big Green Week returns this September with a wide range of events taking place between 11th-18th September. As part of the nationwide event, the week is a chance for us all to celebrate our green spaces and highlight the action Frome is taking to tackle climate change.

Frome Town Council (FTC) have worked with the community to pull together a packed and varied programme with something for everyone: including walks, talks, sessions and of course lots of fun! Over the coming weeks FTC will be highlighting areas of interest in the line-up, this week focussing on getting out and about and enjoying our wonderful spaces.

Cycle Sunday takes place on the 11th and looks to celebrate all things on two wheels. There will be a Bike Jumble, ebikes, Dr Bike and lots of action by the Cheese and Grain car park from 12-3pm and just along the river, FROGS are celebrating the 10-year anniversary of the pump track at Welshmill, with even more fun bike-related activities.

The Wild Bunch will be at Egford Park after school on Tuesday 13th, creating bug houses and exploring the wildlife within the park. You can enjoy a lunchtime Mindful Flow yoga session, 12.30pm-1.30pm, run by Loren Barclay in Rodden Meadow on Wednesday 14th, followed by some pop-up play, hosted by Super Roots at Millennium Green from 3.30-5.30pm. Meanwhile local illustrator, Jenna Herman, will be running her hedgehog story time and craft session at the Victoria Park bandstand.

On Friday 16th September from 5.30 -7pm, join FTC’s resilience officer, Jo Morris, to investigate the wildlife at the new pond in Welshmill. Try out some pond-dipping methods, learn about amphibians and explore the variety of insects and their larva in and around the pond. There’ll also be a chance to find out about the Community Wildlife Mapping project and how you can get involved. Also, get that Friday feeling by joining Mojo Moves Silent Disco in Rodden Meadow from 7– 9pm, there’s no routines to follow, just a good boogie to set yourself up for the further Great Big Green Week activities taking place at the weekend.

Cllr Anita Collier said, “We are extremely spoilt to have so many wonderful parks and open spaces and it’s brilliant to see the areas come to life with so many events for Great Big Green Week. We hope that these activities will encourage more residents to explore and use these spaces, and not just during this week, but all year round – we really are lucky to have them!”
