Good neighbours still needed as shielding continues until June

Annie Maw, Lord-Lieutenant of Somerset.

SOMERSET’S caring communities are urged to keep up the good work and ‘be good neighbours’ for residents continuing to shield as some coronavirus restrictions start to ease.

Annie Maw, Lord-Lieutenant of Somerset.

Since the start of the UK lockdown, volunteers and good neighbours have banded together with the NHS, local authorities and voluntary and charity organisations to support the most vulnerable in the county – and their help is still needed.

People who are shielding, because of their age or an underlying health condition, have received further Government advice they need to continue to stay at home and avoid all non-essential face-to-face contact until at least 30 June as they are the most vulnerable to Coronavirus.

They should continue to seek help in getting shopping, prescriptions, dog-walking and other essentials and make sure they keep in contact with those who have provided the support so far.

Annie Maw, Lord-Lieutenant of Somerset is in one of the groups asked to continue shielding. She said: “The thing which unites us is that we have been advised to be especially careful to avoid being exposed to the virus because it might make us extremely unwell.  For some of us, to contract Covid-19 might put our life in danger.

“I am learning to re-work my life and to find fulfilment in different ways and, surprisingly, this has been a great opportunity to ‘find’ people who I have not known about until now and to support and thank them in a way which would not have formerly been possible.

I have also found that there is, at the end of the telephone or email, a great deal of kindness and compassion.  None of us are on our own.  We have all that we need here in our marvellous county and we will survive this if we stick together.”

Somerset has been overwhelmed by the offers of help that poured in when lockdown started in March. Community groups have sprung into action, council staff have been redeployed to strengthen the response, and Community and Village Agents have worked round the clock to provide support.

More than 1,300 people signed up with Spark Somerset as Corona Helper Volunteers, with Spark providing help and advice to community groups and volunteers

People can still sign up as Corona Helpers – log on to www.corona-helpers.co.uk to register as a volunteer. Those who have signed up to NHS Responders are encouraged to contact Spark Somerset on 01460 202970 or email support@sparksomerset.org.uk to be linked into opportunities locally.

Spark Somerset has also put together a new ‘Volunteer pack’ for COVID-19 support groups. This pack captures lots of useful information and guidance and covers a range of topics from recruiting and supporting volunteers, safeguarding and data protection plus lots of practical tips on volunteering. It’s available to download at https://www.sparksomerset.org.uk/covid-19.

If you – or anyone in your community needs help – a single phone number is available for Coronavirus related support provided by all five local authorities.

The Somerset Coronavirus Support Helpline number, 0300 790 6275, makes it easier for people to access any local authority help they may need, including emotional support, during the current crisis. Lines are open seven days a week from 8am to 6pm.

For more information about local authorities’ response to Coronavirus, please check out your District Council web pages or Somerset County Council on www.somerset.gov.uk/coronavirus

For information on how to stay Healthy Happy and Safe during this time, there is lots of information and resources available at: www.healthysomerset.co.uk/covid-19

  • Documentary screening for Refugee Week

To mark Refugee Week, there will be a screening of an award-winning film exploring human experience of war and its impact on individuals and communities.

The film, ‘2000 Meters to Andriivka’, will be screened at Frome Town Hall on Friday 19th June at 7pm.

Hosted by the Welcome Hub for displaced people, the evening is open to everyone and aims to bring people together for an evening of film and reflection.

After the screening, there will be an opportunity for informal discussion for those who would like to stay and share reflections with others.

Mayor Anita Collier said, “Refugee Week is an opportunity to celebrate community, compassion and the importance of making people feel welcome. We hope this event offers a chance for people to come together, reflect on the experiences of others, and connect through culture and conversation.”

  • Over 200 patients supported at Frome cancer centre

  • Payphone on Wallbridge Road could be removed

A payphone on Wallbridge Road could be removed by BT due to low usage, with a notice inside the phone box indicating plans for its removal.

One resident has raised concerns about the proposal, citing ‘patchy’ mobile phone signal in the area and saying payphones provide a vital and anonymous way for people to reach emergency services, mental health crisis lines, domestic abuse helplines and other support services.

The resident said, “For residents, visitors and anyone passing through, that payphone is not a relic of the past, it is a practical backup that many people may not realise they rely on until it is gone. Whether it is a flat battery, a lost phone or simply no signal at a critical moment, having a working payphone nearby can make an enormous difference.

“Not everyone has a smartphone and not everyone feels safe making certain calls from a personal device. Removing these phones quietly, one by one, chips away at a safety net that protects some of the most vulnerable people in our communities.”

  • Personal best bonanza for Frome Marathoners

Nine members of Frome Running Club completed marathons in April. Six runners tackled the Gwent levels of the Newport Marathon, and three raced in the iconic London event.

In Newport, Michael Gorman’s time (3:10) earned him a PB, but a St John’s medical tent was required to revive him after the finishing post. Following a sugar and salt, he was right as rain. Paul Horton was next to finish, his PB of 3:12 placing him third in the men’s 60-65 category. Sam Baraud finished with a PB of 3:25, followed by Keith Vance (PB of 3:32), Ian Holmes (3:36) and Clare Dunning (PB of 4:12).

“I knocked six minutes off my PB!” Keith Vance enthused. “I was going strong until my calf tightened during the last three miles. I couldn’t resist speeding up for the final 200m, but I cramped and hobbled over the line with the grandstands cheering me on.”

  • Frome author’s Dickens novel attracts TV and film interest

A Frome grandmother who faced years of rejection from literary agents is celebrating the success of her debut novel – and the prospect of it being adapted for screen.

Author Annie Elliot has seen her book, Mr & Mrs Charles Dickens – Her Story – “So the world may know he loved me once”, win praise from high-profile figures including broadcaster Jenni Murray, novelist Fay Weldon and BAFTA Fellow Andrew Davies. A London agent has now expressed interest in the film and television rights.

Despite numerous setbacks on her journey to publication, Annie said she never gave up hope of becoming a published author.

The novel focuses on Catherine Dickens, the wife of Charles Dickens, whose story Annie felt had been overlooked. Inspired by reading Hamnet by Maggie O’Farrell, she began researching Catherine’s life and said she was shocked by what she discovered.

  • Upstairs of former Halifax building could become flats

An application to turn the upstairs of the former Halifax building into six residential flats has been submitted to Somerset Council.

The application, submitted by Criterion Property Investments Ltd, proposes five one-bedroom flats and one studio flat at 1 to 3a The Bridge. The ground floor will retain two retail units, which are currently vacant.

The Design and Access Statement says, “The proposals have been carefully designed to ensure minimal intervention with the existing listed building. The proposal includes the introduction of a single-storey extension to the rear, over the existing modern flat roof structure, to provide living accommodation for a new residential unit with associated new balcony area overlooking the River Frome.”

Frome Town Council has supported the application and welcomed the building being brought back into use after it has been vacant since July 2024.
