Frome Town Council has awarded Nova Sports and Coaching £1,953 to help give children and adults with disabilities access to new, exciting and inclusive sports in the area.
The group applied for support because they wanted to offer local residents a broader range of activities including wheelchair basketball, powerchair football and multisports. The funding will help them to build links with local schools and other community groups to provide one-off ‘taster’ sessions, 7-week programmes and a holiday camp.
Councillor Kate Bielby said, “There has long been a real shortage of opportunities in Frome for young people with additional needs to get involved with sports, especially in the school holidays. I’m absolutely delighted we’re able to support Nova Sport and Coaching who have the skills, experience and enthusiasm to offer a range of inclusive activities where kids can play and have fun.”
Jenny and Alex at Nova Sports and Coaching said, “Thanks to the support of Frome Town Council, Nova will be launching our inclusive sports project in September 2018. The project will see outreach sessions for local children and adults, with and without disabilities, in sports like wheelchair basketball, powerchair football and boccia. Schools, colleges, community groups and individuals across Frome will have access to a wide range of new and exciting opportunities. We are absolutely thrilled to have received the grant and cannot wait to get going!”
All the activities will improve the health and wellbeing of those taking part as well as helping to boost their confidence and build friendships. The club also hope to create opportunities for local people to volunteer in disability sport.
