Frome Heritage Museum has revealed another of its hidden treasures as part of its summer exhibition.
Curators of the museum say, “This treasure, held in the museum, is a fine example of a mid-19th Century helmet of the North Somerset Yeomanry.
“It was kindly donated by Wellington Museum because the Yeomanry was formed initially in Frome and later extended to include sections raised in Shepton Mallet, Bath and Bristol.
“The helmet is made of metal embellished with beautiful brass decorations showing the VR motif and would originally have had a magnificent plume of light grey horsehair.”
The helmet is currently on display at Frome Heritage Museum, open Tuesday to Saturday, 10am -2pm. Entry is free.
