THE Frome Selwood Horticulture Society (FSHS) continues to meet monthly and is open for new visitors to join.
A member of the group, Jane Norris said, “The Frome Selwood Horticulture Society continues to have excellent attendance at its monthly meetings with new members joining each month, and visitors always welcomed.
“So, what is the growing medium that continues to grow such support? Perhaps the breadth of interest: we learn plenty about renovation of gardens and major projects, that maintain the past but look to the future. The Bishop’s Palace, (Wells) Past, Present and Future talk was a perfect example of this, seasonal planting schemes, acknowledging difficulties and the changing climate all being addressed by the expert speaker James Cross.
“Then the February Annual General Meeting, when the members voted to elect the hard-working committee en bloc and agreed an increase in annual membership fee to £15, a snip for what you get for 12 meetings a year, endless tea, raffle and the opportunity for at least three trips out a year. Ray Carver remains our esteemed chairman and Victoria Turner our president, and she spoke on behalf of them both to give thanks for all the support. Not least though, we gave thanks for the life of Terry Joyce, a great grower and photographer who has won many cups in the annual show. Our condolences were extended to his wife, Rachel.
“Then, with the planned fuchsia speaker for March also no longer with us, we had our own Dave Moon stand in who gave a wonderful example of what beauty there is in an hour’s audio-visual trip around NGS and RHS open gardens. Dave’s coat of many talents comes in his merging and matching of wildlife, gardens and music. From the newest RHS Bridgewater garden in Manchester to his own horticultural paradise, we were enthralled by the rich tapestry of beauty that he had woven together.
“And to finish, the now annual daffodil competition that saw 37 pots of bulbs returned of the many given out in the autumn, Victoria Turner was adjudged by members to be first, Marilyn Vernon and Derek Trick second and third respectively and Rosa Pearce fourth. Past president Pam Secker took up the wooden spoon as having moved across the border to Wiltshire growing conditions seem less favourable!”
