The speaker for the evening of 27th March was Ian Williamson who was introduced by Chairman Christine Cornaby.
Ian is a fund raiser for St. Margaret’s Hospice, Yeovil and Taunton and he gave a very interesting talk with slides on his recent trek to Peru.
Ian was accompanied by 25 other fund raisers and during their travels climbed to an altitude of 4,600 metres and were encouraged to drink coca tea to combat altitude sickness. The group spent some nights in a hotel but often camped out in pouring rain. They visited a school, a coffee plantation, Monkey Island and a caman swamp. Ian had some mishaps on the trek and on one occasion fell backwards into a bog, losing half of his walking pole and losing a walking boot in a river. The trek raised the grand sum of £125,000 for the hospice. He was thanked by Shirley Smith.
Tea hostesses for the evening were Julie Brimson, Brenda Burridge, Carol Chaventre and Liz Curtis and the raffle was won by Jill Denning, Shane Dyer, Janet Lye, Lesley Hill, Valerie Humphries and Christine Newton.
Frome Ladies Club has vacancies and anyone wishing to join should ring Chairman Christine Cornaby on Frome 300641 who will be pleased to give details of the varied trips and activities on offer.
The next meeting will be held on 24th April when the speaker will be The Freewheelers giving a talk about “Blood Bikes”.
